Which perfon is very God, and very man, yet one Chrift, the only Mediator between God and man o. III. The Lord Jesus, in his humane nature thus united to the divine, was sanctified and anointed with the holy spirit above measure p; having in himall the treasures of wisdom and knowledgeq; in whom it pleased the Father that all fuiness should dwell r: To the end, that being holy, harmless, undefiled, and full of grace and truth s, he might be thorowly furnished to execute the office of a Mediator and furety t. Which office he took not unto himself, but was spoused to a man whose name was Jofeph, of the house of David; and the virgins name was Mary. v. 31. Altho' the work of redemption was not actually wrought by Chrift till after his incarnation, yet the vertue, efficacy and benefits thereof were communicated unto the elect in all ages, successively from the beginning of the world, inand by those promises, Types and sacrifices, wherein he was revealed and signified to be the feed of the woman which should bruise the ferpent's head, and the Lamb slain from the beginning of the world, being yesterday, and to day the same and for ever m. VII. Christ, in the work of mediation, acteth according to both natures; by each nature doing that which is proper to itselfn: Yet, by reason of the unity of the person, that which is proper to one nature, is sometimes in Scripture attributed to the perfon denominated by the other nature o, VIII. To all those for whom CHRIST hath purchased redemption, he doth certainly and effectually apply and communicate the fame p; making interceffion for them, of his glory. John 17. 2.As thou haftgiven him power over allflesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. Heb.9.12. Neither by theblood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entred in once into the holy place, having obtained eter nal redemption for us. v. 15. And for this caufe he is the Mediator of the NewTeftament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the tranfgreffions that were under the first teftament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
