(1) The holy Spirit being a divine Perfon, cannot properly be faid to be grieved; but the Meaning is, that we, by doing thofe things which offend him, deprive our felves of his face Influences, and caufe him to do by us, as Men are wont to do to thofe who grieve them; namely, to

31. at Col. 3. 8, 19. But now you put off all thefe; Anger, Wrath,

withdraw his Affiftances, and leave us to our felves. When therefore humane Paffions, and bodily Parts, are afcribed to God, we are to underftand fuch Expreffions not properly, but as fpoken by way of Condefcen tion to our Weakness, and as fuited to our Capacity, who in this State are unacquainted with the manner how Spirits act. For were thefe Expreffions to be understood ftrictly, they would infer fome Imperfection in the divine Being, which both Reafon and Religion forbid us to ascribe to God. Since therefore fuch Expreffions occur often in the holy Scriptures, it may be of ufe to explain fome of them. Are Pity and Compaffion, For and Sorrow, afcribed to God; the Meaning is, that God will do the fame and much more for us than Men are wont to do to thofe towards whom they are thus affected? When God punishes, he is faid to be angry; when thefe Punishments are fevere and laffing, he is faid to be full of Fury and Revenge when they are for Idolatry, and for the Difhonour Men do to him, he is faid to be Jealous. As Men when they repent of their do ings alter their Method of Action; fo God is faid to repent, when he does not do what his Threatnings feemed to import, for that there was in them an exception expreffed or underfood. Not that there is any real Change in Gcd, but the Change is in us. Wherefore what God created, he now deftroys; what he before defigned to deftroy, he will now preferve and profper.

God's Face and Countenance towards any Perfon, denotes his Favour, as his turning it away does his Difpleafure. His Eyes denote his Knowledge, his Finger, his Hand, and Arm, his Power; his Bowels, his Mercy in not Punishing us as we deferve; his Ears, his kindness and readiness to hear. For our Eyes are Inftruments of Knowledge, our Hand and Arm of Power, We turn to thofe we favour, and from thofe we are offended with. Many more Inftances might be given, but I cannot profecute this fubject at large; and thefe are fufficient to prevent our Forming in our Minds any grofs Conceptions of God. I will add only one practical Obfervati

on.

If we compare this Verfe and the former, we fhall fee that unholy, corrupt, lewd and filthy Difcourfe, deprives the Guilty of the facred Influences of the holy Spirit, which as they are the Earnest of our future Happiness, fo are they the Pledges of our Pardon and Acceptance. What a mighty Argument is this to prevail with Chriftians to abstain from all fuch Difcourfe, which is an infallible, Token of a debauched and corrupt Mind? And what an afflicting Thought muft it be to all who love God, and their Neighbour, to confider how common fuch Difcourfe and Communication is among vaft Numbers who lay they are Chriftians?
