LIFE OF FREDERIC THE GREAT.

Just published, in 2 vols. 8vo. with a Portrait, from a Picture in the possession of His Majesty, 28s. boards,

LIFE OF FREDERIC THE SECOND,

KING OF PRUSSIA.

BY LORD DOVER.

THESE pages have occupied the author of them for some time, and have extended to a greater length than he origi. nally intended; partly from abundance of materials, and partly from a wish ou his part, having once commenced the work, to do justice to his subject.

He was originally induced to undertake the task, by a feeling, that a Life of Frederic the Second, which should collect under one view the authentic, yet scattered, accounts of that extraordinary man, was a desideratum in history and literature. This opinion he still retains; and any want of success, he conceives, is therefore to be attributed to his own imperfect execution, and not to the defect of interest in the history of the hero of Prussia.

into which historians and biographers are too apt to fall; namely, that of becoming so enamoured of the character of the person whose acts they are relating, that they involuntarily disguise or palliate his faults; and thus present him to the world in too favourable a point of view. How far he has succeeded in preserving impartiality, it remains for the reader to judge.

The authorities referred to in the course of the Life of Frederic will be found to consist principally of works already published; but the author has also had recourse for information to the manuscript collection of the Mitchell Papers, preserved in the British Museum; and to the Correspondence of Lord Marischal and FieldMarshal Keith, in the possession of the Honourable Admiral Fleming.

He has endeavoured to avoid the error, "A most delightful and comprehensive work.-Judicious in selection, intelligent in arrangement, and graceful in style."-Lit. Guzette.

London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Co.

Just published, in 1 large volume, 8vo. New Edition, numerous Plates, 18s. bds. A PRACTICAL TREATISE ON RAIL-ROADS,

AND

INTERIOR COMMUNICATION IN GENERAL;

CONTAINING

An Account of the Performances of the different Locomotive Engines, at and subsequent to the Liverpool Contest; upwards of Two Hundred and Sixty Experiments; with Tables of the Comparative Value of Canals and Rail Roads, and of the Power of the present Locomotive Engines.

BY NICHOLAS WOOD,

Colliery Viewer, Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, &c.

THE rapid progress which Railways have made since the publication of the first edi tion of this work, implies that very important changes must have taken place in their powers and capabilities. Considering, therefore, the necessity of a work, exhibiting the latest improvements, and bringing up the information to the latest period, the author has been induced to enter upon the revision of the former edition, which he now takes the liberty of presenting to the notice of the public.

In accomplishing this, the author has availed himself of every opportunity which his practice has afforded, of obtaining infor

mation on the subject; in addition to which, he has to acknowledge his obligation to several friends, from whom he has obtained very valuable information. These, together with numerous experiments made with a view of supplying, not only what was wanting in the first edition, but also of elucidating the various improvements which successive experiments elicited, form the principal additions to the former edition. The whole bas been revised, and such parts only retained as appeared to be useful, in illustrating the progress towards the present state of improvement.

ATLAS, HISTORIQUE

et

CHRONOLOGIQUE, des SCIENCES et des BEAUX ARTS. Par A. J. de Mancy, Professor of History in the Academy of Paris, Librarian and Professor in the School of Fine Arts, &c.

"This Atlas is a vast repertorium of names, facts, dates, &c. &c. up to the present times, the knowledge of which is necessary to the study of Literary History, Chronology, Science, and the Fine Arts, both Ancient and Modern, executed on the plan of the celebrated Atlas of Lesage, to which it forms an essential companion. The author has compiled, in the form of tables, extensive and valuable stores of information, which, without these, one must have sacrificed a long life to collect. Our task of selection would be difficult, from the rich superabundance of materials which present themselves in every page. As a work of reference, we can foresee that it will find its way into every good library in the kingdom."
