2. New mercies each returning day
Hover around us as we pray—

New perils past, new sins forgiven,

New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

3. If on our daily course our mind

Be set to hallow all we find,

New treasures still, of countless price,
God will provide for sacrifice.

4. The trivial round, the common task,
Will furnish all we ought to ask—
Room to deny ourselves—a road
To bring us daily nearer God.

5. [Seek we no more-content with these,
Let present rapture, comfort, ease,
As Heaven shall bid them, come and go-
The secret this of rest below.]

6. Only, O Lord, in Thy dear love
Fit us for perfect rest above;
And help us, this and every day,
To live more nearly as we pray.

"I am the Light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."-John viii. 12.

299 O JESUS, Lord of heavenly grace,

L.M.

Thou brightness of the Father's face,

Thou fountain of eternal light,

Whose beams disperse the shades of night!

2. Come, holy Sun of heavenly love,
Pour down Thy radiance from above;
And to our inward hearts convey
Thy Holy Spirit's cloudless ray.

3. Do Thou our actions deign to bless,
And loose the bands of wickedness;
From sudden falls our feet defend,
And bring us to a prosperous end.

4. May faith, deep-rooted in the soul,
Subdue our flesh, our minds control;
May guile depart, and discord cease,
And all within be joy and peace.

5. Oh! hallowed be each coming day;
Let meekness be our morning ray;
And faithful love our noontide light;
And hope our sunset calm and bright.

6. O Christ, with each returning morn
Thine image to our hearts is borne;
Oh! may we ever clearly see

Our Saviour and our God in Thee. Amen.

"In all thy ways acknowledge Him; and He shall direct thy paths."

300 Lo! the golden light is peering;

8's.&7's.

Let the dimness fleet away,
Which so long hath kept us veering
From the narrow path astray.

Prov. iii. 6.

2. May the morn, sweet calmness breathing,
Keep us, morn-like, chaste and pure;
In our lips no falsehood sheathing,
In our hearts no sin obscure.

3. So the day, all smoothly gliding,
May preserve our tongue from guile,
Eyes from wandering, feet from sliding,
Hands from aught that can defile.

4. All day long an Eye is o'er us,
Which our every secret knows,
Sees our every step before us,

From first morn till evening's close.

5. To the Father lauds unending,

To the Son, and Spirit blest,

Still from aye to aye descending,

Be throughout all worlds addrest. Amen.

Evening Hymns.

"On the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the Lord."-Exod. xxxv. 2.

301 ERE another Sabbath close,

7's.

Ere again we seek repose,
Lord, our songs ascend to Thee,
At Thy feet we bow the knee.

2. For the mercies of the day,
For this rest upon our way,
Thanks to Thee alone be given,
Lord of earth, and King of heaven.

3. Cold our services have been,
Mingled every prayer with sin:
But Thou canst and wilt forgive:
By Thy grace alone we live.

4. Whilst this thorny path we tread,
May Thy love our footsteps lead;
When our journey here is past,
May we rest with Thee at last.

5. Let these earthly sabbaths prove
Foretastes of our joys above;

While their steps Thy pilgrims bend,
To the rest which knows no end.

"As for

me,

I will behold Thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness."-Ps. xvii. 15.

302 SOON shall the evening star, with silver ray, Shed its mild lustre on this sacred day;

10's.

Resume we then, ere sleep and silence reign,
The rites which holiness and Heaven ordain.

2. Still let each awful truth our thoughts engage,
That shines revealed in inspiration's page;
Nor those blest hours in empty trifles waste,
Which all who lavish shall lament at last.

3. And as yon sun descending rolls away,
To rise in glory at return of day;
So may we set, this transient being o'er,
To rise in glory on th' eternal shore !

4. Father of heaven! in whom our hopes confide,
Whose power defends us, and whose precepts guide,
In life our guardian, and in death our friend,
Glory supreme be Thine, till time shall end!

"Abide with us; for it is toward evening."-Luke xxiv. 29.

303 SAVIOUR, abide with us;

S.M.

The day is now far gone:

We would obtain a blessing thus,
By coming to Thy throne.

2. We have not reached that land,
That happy land, as yet,

Where holy angels round Thee stand,
Where suns can never set.
