Dedication, &c., of a Church.

"There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High.”—Ps. xlvi. 4.

345 GLORIOUS things of thee are spoken,

8's. & 7's.

Zion, city of our God;

double. He, whose word cannot be broken,
Formed thee for His own abode.
On the Rock of Ages founded,

What can shake Thy sure repose
With salvation's walls surrounded,
Thou art kept from all thy foes.

?

2. Here the stream of living waters,
Springing from eternal Love,
Flows to cheer thy sons and daughters,
And all dread of want remove.

None can faint where such a river

Freely flows their thirst t' assuage;
Blessings which, like God their giver,
Never fail from age to age.

3. Saviour, if in Zion's city

Thou record our humble name,
Let the world deride or pity-
We may well endure the shame:
Fading is the world's dim pleasure,
All its boasted pomp and show:

Solid joy and lasting treasure

None but Zion's children know.

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee." Ps. cxxii. 6.

346 O KING of Salem, Prince of peace,

L.M.

Bid strife among Thy subjects cease;
One is our Father, One our Lord,
One body, spirit, hope, reward;

2. One God and Father of us all,

On whom Thy Church and people call,
Oh, may we one communion be,

One with each other, one with Thee.

3. Bless those whose voice salvation brings,
Who minister in holy things:

Thy Bishops, Priests, and Deacons bless,
Clothe them with zeal and righteousness.

4. Let many in the Judgment-day,
Turned from the error of their way,

Their hope, their joy, their crown appear;
Save those who preach and those who hear.

5. So may we join the song of love,

Which saints and angels sing above;
All honour, glory, praise to Thee,
Great Trinity in Unity. Amen.

66

My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people."-Isa. lvi. 7.

347 THIS stone to Thee in faith we lay:

[merged small][ocr errors]

We build the temple, Lord, to Thee;
Thine eye be open night and day,

To guard this house and sanctuary.

2. Here, when Thy people seek Thy face,
And dying sinners pray to live,

Hear Thou in heaven, Thy dwelling-place;
And when Thou hearest, oh forgive!

3. Here, when Thy messengers proclaim
The blessed Gospel of Thy Son,
Still by the power of His great Name
Be mighty signs and wonders done.

4. And may the eternal Father deign
Here to abide, no transient guest;
Here may the world's Redeemer reign,
And here the Holy Spirit rest!

5. That glory never hence depart !—

Yet choose not, Lord, this house alone;
Thy kingdom come to every heart;

In every bosom fix Thy throne!

"Now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that My Name may be there for ever and Mine eyes and My heart shall be there perpetually." 2 Chron. vii. 16.

348 CHRIST is our Corner-stone,

4.6's,2.8's.

On Him we surely build;
With His true saints alone

The courts of Heaven are filled.
On His great love

Our hopes we place

Of present grace
And joys above.

2. Oh then with hymns of praise

These hallowed courts shall ring :

Our voices we will raise

The Triune God to sing:

And thus proclaim

In joyful song,

Both loud and long,

That glorious Name.

3. Here, gracious God, do Thou
For evermore draw nigh;
Accept each faithful prayer,
And mark each suppliant sigh:

In copious shower

On all who pray

Each holy day

Thy blessings pour.

4. Here may we gain from Heaven

The grace which we implore,

[blocks in formation]

5. Praise to the God of heaven,
Praise to His only Son,

And praise to Him be given
Who joins them both in One-
The heavenly Dove,

Who makes us meet

For the blest seat

Of God above.

Amen.

"Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God."-Rev. xxi. 3.

349 BLESSED City, heavenly Salem,

8's. &7's.

Vision dear of peace and love,
Who, of living stones upbuilded,
Art the joy of heaven above:
And with angel cohorts circled,
As a bride to earth dost move :—

2. From celestial realms descending-
Bridal glory round her shed-
To His presence decked with jewels
By her Lord shall she be led :
All her streets and all her bulwarks
Of pure gold are fashioned.
