2. Christ, by highest heaven adored!
Christ, the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb!
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail the Incarnate Deity!

Pleased as man with man to appear,
Jesus our Immanuel here.

Hark! the herald angels sing, &c.

3. Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Hark! the herald angels sing, &c.

"A Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."-Luke ii. 11.

31

O COME all ye faithful,

P.M. Joyfully triumphant,

To Bethlehem hasten now with glad accord:

Lo! in a manger

Lies the King of angels :

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

2. Though true God of true God,

Light of light eternal,

The womb of a Virgin He hath not abhorred:

Son of the Father,

Not made, but begotten:

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

3. Amen, Lord, we bless Thee,

Born for our salvation,

O Jesus, for ever be Thy Name adored;
Word of the Father,

Late in flesh appearing:

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

"Unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings."-Mal. iv. 2.

32 SALVATION! oh the joyful sound!

P.M.

'Tis pleasure to our ears;

A sovereign balm for every wound,
A cordial for our fears.

Chorus. Glory, honour, praise, and power,
Be unto the Lamb for ever!
Jesus Christ is our Redeemer,
Hallelujah! praise the Lord.

2. [Buried in sorrow and in sin,
At hell's dark door we lay;
But we arise, by grace Divine,
To see a heavenly day.
Glory, honour, &c.

3. Salvation! O Thou dying Lamb!
To Thee the praise belongs;
Salvation shall inspire our hearts,

And dwell upon our tongues.
Glory, honour, &c.

4. Salvation! let the echo fly
The spacious earth around;
While all the armies of the sky
Conspire to swell the sound.
Glory, honour, &c.

"We all, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." 2 Cor. iii. 18.

33 Love divine, all love excelling,

8,7, double.

Joy of heaven, to earth come down!
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling,

All Thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus! Thou art all compassion,

Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation,
Dwell in every faithful heart.

2. Come, Almighty to deliver,
Let us all Thy life receive,
Suddenly return, and never,

Never more Thy temples leave :
Thee we would be ever blessing,
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above;
Praise Thee ever without ceasing,
Glory in Thy perfect love.

3. Finish, Lord, Thy new creation,
Pure and spotless may we be;
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee :
Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,

Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Epiphany.

"Where is He that was born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him.”—Matt. ii. 2.

11,10.

34 BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid! Star of the East, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid!

2. Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining, Low lies His head with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him in slumber reclining,

Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all!

3. Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion,
Odours of Edom and offerings divine?
Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest or gold from the mine?

4. Vainly we offer each ample oblation,

Vainly with gifts would His favour secure ; Richer by far is the heart's adoration,

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

5. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid! Star of the East, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid!

"I shall see Him, but not now; I shall behold Him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel."

35 SONS of men, behold from far,
7's. Hail the long-expected Star!

Num. xxiv. 17.

Jacob's Star, that gilds the night,
Guides bewildered Nature right.
2. Mild it shines on all beneath,
Piercing through the shades of death;
Scattering error's wide-spread night,
Kindling darkness into light.

3. Nations all, remote and near,
Haste to see your God appear!
Haste, for Him your hearts prepare,
Meet Him manifested there!

4. There behold the Dayspring rise,
Pouring light on mortal eyes!
See it chase the shades away,
Shining to the perfect day!

5. Sing, ye morning stars, again;
God descends on earth to reign!
Praise and blessing never cease!
Hail the reign of truth and peace!

"The Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy
mourning shall be ended."-Isa. lx. 20.

36 LIGHT of those whose dreary dwelling

8,7,

double.

Borders on the shades of death,

Come, and, all Thy love revealing,
Dissipate the clouds beneath.
