4. But though from that awful face
Heaven shall fade and earth shall fly,
Fear not ye, His chosen race,

Your redemption draweth nigh.

"Who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth?"-Mal. iii. 2.

9 THAT day of wrath, that dreadful day,
L.M. When heaven and earth shall pass away!—
What power shall be the sinner's stay?
How shall he meet that dreadful day?

2. When, shrivelling like a parched scroll,
The flaming heavens together roll;
When louder yet, and yet more dread,
Swells the loud trump that wakes the dead;-

3. Oh! on that day, that wrathful day,
When man to judgment wakes from clay,
Be Thou the trembling sinner's stay,
Though heaven and earth shall pass away.

"When the Son of Man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory."— Matt. xxv. 31.

10 THE Lord will come! the earth shall quake,
L.M. The hills their fixed seat forsake;

And, withering, from the vault of night
The stars withdraw their feeble light.

2. The Lord will come! but not the same As once in lowly form He came,

A silent Lamb to slaughter led,

The bruised, the suffering, and the dead.

3. The Lord will come! a dreadful form,
With wreath of flame and robe of storm,
On cherub-wings and wings of wind,
Anointed Judge of human-kind!

4. Can this be He, who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway,
By power oppressed, and mocked by pride?
Can this be He-the Crucified?

5. Go, tyrants! to the rocks complain!
Go, seek the mountain's cleft in vain!
But Faith, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy-The Lord is come!

"Behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me."-Rev. xxii. 12.

11 DAY of judgment! day of wonders!

8,7,4,7.

Hark! the trumpet's awful sound,

Louder than a thousand thunders,
Shakes the vast creation round!

How the summons

Will the sinner's heart confound!

2. See the Judge our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty Divine!

Ye who long for His appearing

Then shall in His glory shine!
Gracious Saviour!

Own me in that day for Thine!

3. At His call the dead awaken,

Rise to life from earth and sea;
All the powers of nature, shaken,
From His face prepare to flee:
Careless sinner!

What will then become of thee?

4. But to those who have confessed,
Loved, and served the Lord below,
"Come near, ye blessed,

He will say,

See the kingdom I bestow!

Ye for ever

Shall My love and glory know."

"At midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him."-Matt. xxv. 6.

12 SLEEPERS, wake! a voice is calling,

P.M.

It is the watchman on the walls:

"Thou city of Jerusalem!

"For, lo! the Bridegroom comes!
66 Arise, and take your lamps!

"Hallelujah!

"Awake! His kingdom is at hand!

"Go forth, go forth to meet your Lord!"

"Now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed."-Rom. xiii. 11.

13 HARK! a thrilling voice is sounding;

8,7.

"Christ is nigh," it seems to say, "Cast away the works of darkness, "O ye children of the day!"

2. Startled at the solemn warning,
Let the earth-bound soul arise;
Christ our Sun, all gloom dispelling,
Shines upon the morning skies.

3. Lo! the Lamb, so long expected,
Comes with pardon down from heaven:
Let us haste, with tears of sorrow,
One and all to be forgiven.

4. So, when next He comes in glory,
Wrapping all the earth in fear,
May He then, as our Defender,
On the clouds of heaven appear.

5. Honour, glory, might, dominion,
To the Father, and the Son,
With the everlasting Spirit,
While eternal ages run.

Amen.

"Whose fan is in His hand, and He will throughly purge His floor." Matt. iii. 12.

14 AND will the Judge descend?

[blocks in formation]

2. How will my heart endure
The terrors of that day,

When earth and heaven before His face,
Astonished, shrink away?

3. But ere that trumpet shakes
The mansions of the dead,

Hark! from the Gospel's gentle voice
What joyful tidings spread!

4. Ye sinners, seek His grace,

Whose wrath ye cannot bear;
Fly to the shelter of His Cross,
And find salvation there.

5. So shall that curse remove,

By which the Saviour bled;
And the last awful day shall pour
Its blessings on your head.

"I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it... and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened."― Rev. xx. 11, 12.

15 DAY of wrath! O day of mourning!

г.. See once more the Cross returning,

Heaven and earth in ashes burning!
