be to fearful hearts, and faint hands, and the sinner that goeth two ways! Woe unto him that is faint-hearted ! for he believeth not; therefore shall he not be defended. Woe unto you that have lost patience ! and what will ye do when the Lord shall visit you? They that fear the Lord will not disobey his word; and they that love him will keep his ways. They that fear the Lord will seek that which is well-pleasing unto him; and they that love him shall be filled with the law. They that fear the Lord will prepare their hearts, and humble their souls in his sight, saying, We will fall into the hands of the Lord, and not into the hands of men : for as his majesty is, so is his mercy. [Ecclus ii.]
Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in thee: turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me ; for I am desolate and afflicted.
The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses. Look upon mine affliction and my pain : and forgive all
O keep my soul, and deliver me : for I put my trust in thee. [Ps. xxv.]
Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, () Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: yea, more
than they that watch for the morning. Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. [Ps. cxxx.]
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me froin my sin. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Rcstore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free Spirit. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. [Ps. li.]
Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my
heart is overwhelmed : lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and I will trust in the covert of thy wings. [Ps. Ixi.] Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. [Ps. lvii.] O send out thy light and thy truth : let them lead me ; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. [Ps. xliii.] Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire besides thee. My flesh and my heart faileth : but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. [Ps. lxxiii.]
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, .for the living God: when shall I come and appear
before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me; for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts : all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
Yet the Lord will conimand his loving-kindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. [Ps. xlii.] ]
Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. [Ps. xxxi.]
GOD OUR COMFORT.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort, who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (2 Cor. i.] Come unto me,
that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and
learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. [Matt. xi.]
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. [Ps. xxvii.] The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee. [.Jer. xxxi.] For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end." Then shail ye call upon me, and ye shall
go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. [.Jer. xxix.] As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you, and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. [Isa. Ixvi.] * For the Lord will not cast off for ever : but though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. For he doth not affict willingly, nor grieve the children of men. [Lam. iii.]
love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth ; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him : but
know him ; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you. little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye
shall know that I am in my Father, I in you. [.John xiv.]
The Lord is my light and my salvation ; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Though a host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after ; that I
may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion : in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord. Hear, O Lord, when I
voice; have mercy also upon me, and answer me. When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away
my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. When my father and
my mother forsake me, then the Lord will
Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path. I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. [Ps. xxvii.]
take me up:
