3 Some trust in steeds for war design'd,
On chariots some rely;

Against them all we call to mind,
The pow'r of God most high.

4 Still save us, Lord, and still proceed,
Our rightful cause to bless;
Hear, King of heaven, in times of need,
The prayers that we address.

[blocks in formation]

Our King the Care of Heaven.

1 THE king, O Lord, with songs of praise,
Shall in thy strength rejoice;
And, bless'd with thy salvation, raise
To heav'n his cheerful voice.

2 Then let the king on God alone
For timely aid rely ;

His mercy shall support the throne,
And all our wants supply.

3 But, righteous Lord, his stubborn foes
Shall feel thy dreadful hand;

Thy vengeful arm shall find out those
That hate bis mild command.

4 Thus, Lord, thy wondrous power declare, And thus exalt thy fame;

B

Whilst we glad songs of praise prepare
For thy almighty name.

Christ's Sufferings and Exaltation.
1 NOW let our mournful songs record
The dying sorrows of our Lord,
When he complain'd in tears of blood,
As one forsaken of his God.

2 The Jews beheld him thus forlorn,

And shake their heads and laugh in scorn, "He rescu'd others from the grave;

"Now let him try himself to save.'

[ocr errors]

3 They wound his head, his hands, his feet, Till streams of blood each other meet; By lot his garments they divide,

And mock the pangs in which he died. 4 But God, his Father, heard his cry; Rais'd from the dead, he reigns on high; The nations learn his righteousness, And humble sinners taste his grace.

PSALM XXIII. C. M.

FIRST VERSION.

God's pastoral Care of his People.

1 MY shepherd is the living Lord, I therefore nothing need;

In pastures fair, near pleasant streams,
He setteth me to feed.

2 He shall convert and glad my soul,
And put my mind in frame,

To walk in paths of righteousness,
For his most holy name.

3 Yea, though I walk in vale of death,
Yet will I fear no ill;

Thy rod and staff do comfort me,
And thou art with me still.

4 Through all my life thy favour is
So frankly shewn to me,
That in thy house for evermore
My dwelling-place shall be.

[blocks in formation]

1 THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye:
My noonday walks he shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.

2 When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountain pant.

To fertile vales and dewy meads,
My weary wandering steps he leads,
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

3 Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My steadfast heart shall fear no ill,
For thou, O Lord, art with me still;
Thy friendly crook shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dreadful shade.

4 Though in a rare and rugged way,
Through devious lonely wilds I stray,
Thy bounty shall my pains beguile,
The barren wilderness shall smile,
With sudden greens and herbage crown'd,
And streams shall murmur all around.

[blocks in formation]

1 YE gates and everlasting doors,
Lift up your heads on high;
Then shall the King of glorious state?
Come in triumphantly.

2 Who is the King of glorious state?
The great and mighty Lord!

[graphic]

The mighty Lord in battle strong,
And trial of the sword.

3 Ye gates and everlasting doors,
Lift up your heads on high;

Then shall the King of glorious state
Come in triumphantly.

4 Who is the King of glorious state?
The Lord of Hosts it is;

The kingdom and the royalty
Of glorious state are his.

PSALM XXIV.

SECOND VERSION.

L. M.

Saints dwell in Heaven; or, Christ's Ascension. 1 REJOICE, ye shining worlds on high, Behold the King of Glory nigh!

Who can this King of Glory be?
The mighty Lord, the Saviour 's he.

2 Ye heav'nly gates, your leaves display,
To make the Lord, the Saviour way:
Laden with spoils from earth and hell,
The Conqu'ror comes with God to dwell.
3 Rais'd from the dead, he goes before;
He opens heav'n's eternal door,

To give his saints a bless'd abode,
Near their Redeemer and their God.
