The Bishop of Ely will hold an Ordination, in London, on Sunday, the 9th of June next. Candidates for Holy Orders are desired to transmit the requisite papers, pre-paid, to his Lordship's Secretary, John Burder, Esq., 27, Parliamentstreet, Westminster, on or before the 5th of May. Candidates for Deacons' Orders (except on College Titles) are to give immediate notice to the Bishop, at Ely House, Dover-street, London, of their intention to offer themselves, unless they have already had communication with his Lordship. The Bishop takes this opportunity to notify to the Reverend the Clergy of Cambridgeshire, and that part of Suffolk in his Diocese, that it is his intention to hold Confirmation therein, in the month of June next, of which further notice will be given.

The Lord Bishop of Winchester purposes to hold Confirmations throughout the county of Hants, including the Isle of Wight, in the course of the ensuing Summer.

ESTABLISHING

NATIONAL SOCIETY'S SPECIAL FUND, FOR SCHOOLS IN THE MANUFACTURING AND MINING DISTRICTS.

The Sub-Committee appointed to collect this fund desire to thank the friends of education who have already come forward, for the liberality of their contributions, which clearly show that the contributors appreciate the magnitude of the work undertaken by the Society-a work extending over the most populous and most destitute quarters of the kingdom, and not likely to be completed for some years.

Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury was in the chair. There was also a very good attendance of members, amongst whom were the Lord Bishops of London and Llandaff; Sir R. H. Inglis, Bart, M.P.; the Very Rev. the Dean of Chichester; the Rev. Drs. Spry, J. Jennings, and Benjamin Harrison; and Messrs. James Cocks, N. Connop, J. S. Salt, W. Davis, E. Baddeley, Powell, and W. Cotton.

After some preliminary business, grants of money were voted towards building churches at Seacroft, in the parish of Whitehurst, Yorkshire; at the Link, in the parish of Leigh, Worcestershire; at Blaydon, in the parish of Ryton and Winlaton, Durham; at Thorpe Acre, Peterborough; and Great Wisley, in the parish of Cannock, Staffordshire; and at the Groves, in the parish of Sutton, near Hull, Yorkshire; also, towards enlarging, by re-building, the church at Bidnath, Staffordshire; and towards enlarging and otherwise increasing the accommodation in existing churches, at Usk, Monmouthshire; Hunmanby; Spirnall; Lewis, St. Ann; Buckley, in Hawarden, and Stoke St. Gregory, Somersetshire.

The above-named 11 parishes contain a population of 34,831 souls, and possess church accommodation in 17 churches and chapels for only 7,611 persons, including 2,149 free seats, to which provision of church accommodation 3,826 sittings will be added, by the erection of the seven new churches, and the rebuilding, enlarging, and otherwise increasing the sittings in several existing churches and chapels: of this additional accommodation 2,942 will be free and unappropriated sittings.

The committee next examined the certificates relating to the completion of three new churches and chapels, and of the increase of accommodation in seven existing churches and chapels; and orders were issued for the trustees to pay over to the treasurer the sum awarded in each case.

It should be remarked here that the population of the 10 parishes just alluded to is 85,115 persons, for whom church accommodation to the extent of only 7,729 sittings was provided previously to the execution of the works now certified as completed; of that number not more than 2,580 were free; the number of the seats added to the church-room

before provided is 3,796; of these 2,560 are free and unappropriated.

Since the Committee last met, the Society has lost a valuable officer in the late Rev. Mr. Rodber, M.A., who had been for many years the secretary to the institution. The Rev. Thomas Bowdler has been appointed to succeed him.

DIOCESE OF LONDON.

City of London Church Missionary Society. On Tuesday, the members and friends of this institution held their anniversary meeting at the Hall of Commerce, in Threadneedle-street; Mr. John Labouchere, the banker, In the chair, supported by several of the clergy. The Chairman, having opened the proceedings in a long address, drew the attention of the meeting to the report. This document announced that the missions of the parent society now embrace 72 stations, employing 1,263 labourers, of whom a large number were ordained ministers. The number of schools was 665, providing education for an aggregate of 66,000 persons, in Northern India and Bombay, &c. In New Zealand alone there were 25,000 natives under instruction. During the past year there had been forwarded to the parent, from the branch society, 9231., of which sum 5007. had been granted by the City corporation, and 1007. presented by the Goldsmith's Company, On the motion of the Rev. Dr. M'Caul, seconded by Mr. Clarke, the report was adopted; and several resolutions were proposed, spoken to, and passed, in furtherance of the funds and objects of the institution.

Preachership of Lincoln's-inn.-On Friday, the 12th January, the election for the above office, rendered vacant by the elevation of the late preacher, the Rev. Dr. Lonsdale, to the see of Lichfield, took place in the council-chamber of the inn. The proceedings were, as is customary on such occasions, strictly private, no person except the Benchers, in whom the election is vested, being present. We were informed there were 37 electors present, amongst whom were the Right Hon. Lord Bexley, Lords Brougham and Campbell, and Vice-Chancellor Wigram. There were 17 candidates-viz., the Venerable Archdeacon Manning, the Rev.

Mr. Vaughan, the Rev. Mr. Garbett, the Rev. T. L. Claughton, the Rev. F. Hewson, the Rev. J. S. Anderson, the Rev. Thomas Robinson, the Rev. Dr. Hussey, the Hon. and Rev. Thomas Randall, and the Rev. C. Merivale. The Benchers met at four o'clock, and broke up shortly after five, when it was announced that the election had fallen upon the Rev. J. S. Anderson, of Brighton, Chaplain to her Majesty the Queen Dowager.

DIOCESE OF BATH AND WELLS. The Venerable Archdeacon Brymer has been appointed Commissary for the Diocese of Bath and Wells, under the provisions of the Episcopal Functions Act, 6 & 7 Vic., c. 62; the Rev. J. T. Law, the late Special Commissary, having signified his desire to retire from the duties of the office.

Her Majesty the Queen Dowager has graciously forwarded 201. to the Rector and Churchwardens of Walcot parish, Bath, towards finishing St. Stephen's Church, and 207. to the fund for increasing the endowment of Christ Church, Rossett, Denbighshire.

DIOCESE OF LICHFIELD. Consecration of Christchurch, Derby. -On Tuesday week, this imposing cere mony was performed by the Lord Bishop of Lichfield, and derived an additional interest from the fact, that this is the first time the right rev. prelate (Dr. Lonsdale) has assisted at the solemn dedication of a building to the service of Almighty God, since his promotion to the Episcopal chair. Upwards of fifty clergymen were present, besides a large number of the laity.

The Lichfield Diocesan Church Extension Society has voted a grant of 5004 towards a new church for the district of Brockmoore, in the parish of Kingswinford.
