DIOCESE OF YORK.

York Minster.-The subscriptions for the restoration of this sacred edifice amount to about 7,400.

DIOCESE OF LONDON.

The Lord Bishop of London is about to address to the Clergy of his diocese a Pastoral Letter, on the subject of a sermon to be preached by them on the first Sunday after Trinity, in behalf of the " Metropolis Churches Fund."

Her Majesty the Queen Dowager has been graciously pleased to forward 201. towards the foundation of an infant school in East Greenwich; 207. in aid to the repair and enlargement of Colne Church;

and 207. towards the erection of a national school at Peasmarsh, near Rye, Sussex.

Sons of the Clergy.-There will be no grand performance this year in the body of St. Paul's Cathedral, as was the custom for a century past. Objections having been made to the erection of scaffolding, which interrupted the daily service, the Archbishop of Canterbury, acting under the advice of the Bishop of London, has decided that the festival is to be confined to the performance of one of the old services, with some increase of the choir.

"The Times" Scholarships.-Two handsome marble tablets have been lately erected in the City of London School, recording the benefaction to the school, one of them being occupied with the following inscription, commemorating the establishment of The Times Scholarships:" This Tablet was erected as a perpetual memorial of the foundation of The Times Scholarships, one in connexion with the City of London School, the other with Christ's Hospital, for the Benefit of Pupils proceeding from those Institutions to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The endowment of these Scholarships was effected out of the proceeds of a Subscription entered into by English and Foreign Merchants, Bankers, and other Persons interested in the Preservation of Mercantile Confidence and Security, to testify their warm Admiration and grateful sense of the moral Courage, indefatigable Perseverance, and distinguished Ability, shown by the Proprietors of The Times Newspaper, A. D., MDCCCXLI., in the ready Detection and fearless Exposure of a most extensive and fraudulent Conspiracy, which, from its subtle and daring character, was unparalleled in the Annals of Commerce. These distinguished Services derived an additional Lustre from the Unexampled Generosity and Disinterestedness of the Proprietors, in their Refusal to be reimbursed any Portion of the Heavy Expenses incurred in the Progress of their noble and arduous Exertions."

Stratford, Essex.-The Venerable Archdeacon Jones has very liberally appropriated his fees arising from interments in the vaults under St. John's Chapel, Stratford, to the erection of a house for the residence of the officiating minister. We believe the sum already amounts to about 4007.

DIOCESE OF DURHAM. Forest and Frith.-His Grace the Duke of Cleveland is going to erect a suitable Parsonage-house in the township of Forest and Frith, near Middleton-inTeesdale, where his Grace maintains a resident minister for the spiritual benefit of the people in that retired district.

Staindrop.-The interesting ceremony of laying the foundation-stone of the new chapel at Ingleton, in the parish of Staindrop, by his Grace the Duke of Cleveland, took place on Friday last. Many of the leading families of the neighbourhood were present, and a great concourse of people.

DIOCESE OF Carlisle.

The Bishop of Carlisle intends to make a visitation throughout his diocese in June.

DIOCESE OF CHESTER.

Her Majesty the Queen Dowager, with her accustomed munificence, has contributed the sum of 201. towards the erection of a day and Sunday school at Unsworth, near Bury St. Edmund's.

St. Stephens' and All Martyrs' Church, Leverbridge. This beautiful and singular new church, built of terra cotta, in the decorated English style of architecture, was opened for divine service on Sunday last. The psalms of David were chanted with very good effect by a choir of thirty persons (chiefly Sunday scholars), resident in the neighbourhood, assisted by several ladies and gentlemen; and after an excellent sermon from the Vicar, the Rev. J. Slade, to a crowded and attentive congregation, the sums collected at the offertory amounted to 207. 168. It is likely the consecration will take place about the 25th of May, on which occasion we may probably give a description of this singular specimen of brick-work.

DIOCESE OF OXFORD. Thame. The parish church is about to be re-pewed, the necessary funds to

defray the expense having been raised by voluntary subscriptions amongst the inhabitants. On each side of the pews, which will be placed in the centre, there will be free sittings for between 300 and 400 persons more than at present.

DIOCESE OF GLOUCESTER AND BRISTOL.

Gainsborough.-A new church is to be erected forthwith at Gainsborough, for which purpose Mr. H. B. Hickman, the lord of the manor, has given an eligible site of ground.

DIOCESE OF EXETER.

Monument to Hooker.-A proposal has been made for the erection of a monument to the memory of Richard Hooker, (author of the famous work on on "Ecclesiastical Polity,") on the site of St. George's Church, Exeter. The design is a Tudor monumental cross, founded on that of Queen Eleanor, and consists of a figure in a richly cuspated and crocketed canopy.

DIOCESE OF SALISBURY. Colonial Bishoprics.-In compliance with the pastoral letter of the Lord Bishop Salisbury, several sermons have been preached in various parts of his Lordship's Diocese, and large collections made, for the endowment of bishoprics in Australia, New Zealand, and other colonies.

The church (which is to be dedicated to Matthias) will be in the early English style, and will contain 250 (all free) sittings. The estimated cost is 1,1007.

GENERAL INTELLIGENCE.

SOCIETY FOR PROMOTING CHRISTIAN
KNOWLEDGE.
March, 1844.

At the General Meeting, held on Tuesday, the 5th of March, 1844, the minutes having been read, it was moved by J. C. Meymott, Esq.,

"That the Standing Committee be requested to reconsider the course taken in regard to Bishop Ken's Manual and Archdeacon Hale's work, as reported at the Meeting in February."

This was seconded by N. Goldsmid, and carried.

A lengthened report was read from the Tract Committee, in reference to the dissatisfaction that prevailed among certain members of the Society under an impression that the "Committee have been in the practice of making alterations, as to doctrine, sentiments, and expressions in the works of deceased authors, which had been adopted in their original state by the Society."

The Report contains a statement of facts connected with the Committee from its first appointment in 1834, its growing duties, and the "great difficulty they had experienced in fulfilling the wishes of the Board." And further, that "the Committee examined such books and tracts as were referred to them by the Board, and reported to the Board the results of their examination, reommending such changes to be made in those books or tracts as they thought desirable; and in no single instance does it appear that the Tract Committee authorised the publication of any work so altered without the express sanction and approval of the Board." That "so far from having adopted the measures which they are represented to have adopted, they have been engaged, to the utmost of their power, in securing the publication, in their original state, of such works as had not been altered with the express sanction of the General Board." That "in these observations they do not in anywise advert to those Books and Tracts which had, at any time previous to their appointment, been altered and adapted to the use of the Society, and published by direction of

the Board." The Report was ordered to "be entered on the minutes, and printed in the Monthly Report." A memorial of certain Members, resident in the diocese of Lichfield, was then read to the Meeting, of their earnest hope that the sound and orthodox principles which have so long distinguished this Society, as the instrument of the Church of England in some of her most important functions, may jealously be maintained. It was ordered to be entered upon the minutes, and printed in the Monthly Report."

A letter was read from the Lord Bishop of Nova Scotia, dated Halifax, Feb. 5, 1844, in which he solicited a grant for a new church at Pugwash, on the shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. His Lordship also solicited a grant in aid of King's College, Windsor, Nova Scotia, of transmitted letters from several clergymen in his diocese, requesting grants and books. The sum of 150l. was granted by the Society towards the support of the divinity students at King's College, Nova Scotia; and 157. towards the erection of a church at Pugwash. Sets of books were also granted for several parishes. The secretary announced that Mr. Benjamin Harrison had in his possession 10007. placed in his hands by a friend, to be applied to religious and charitable purposes in connexion with the society. At the request of Mr. Harrison, onefourth of this sum will be placed at the disposal of the Bishop of New Zealand, one-fourth will be given to the Bishop of Australia, one-fourth will be assigned to some special purpose at the discretion of the committee, and the remaining fourth will be applied as the society may deem expedient. The 2501. to be assigned to a special purpose, it was unanimously agreed should be appropriated towards the fund for the endowment of a Bishopric at New Brunswick. The society granted 1007. towards the erection of a church at Pentwortham, in the diocese of New Zealand. Several other grants were made. Donations to the amount of 7431., and legacies to the amount of 3007. were announced; 86 new members were admitted.

INCORPORATED SOCIETY FOR PROMOTING THE ENLARGEMENT, BUILDING, &C., OF CHURCHES AND CHAPELS.

A meeting of this society was held on the 18th ult., at their chambers, in St. Martin's-place, Trafalgar-square, to take into consideration a variety of applications from parishes and districts requesting assistance from the funds of the society, to aid in the enlargement of old or the building of new churches, in places sadly in want of church accommodation for the working classes of the people. The meeting proceeded to investigate the cases referred to their consideration, and eventually voted assistance to the amount of 3,130. towards the erection of seven additional churches or chapels; the rebuilding, with enlargement, of three existing churches; and the extension of the accommodation in eight other existing churches.

The situations where the additional places of worship are to be erected are the following:-Lower Cam, Gloucestershire; Brackmoor, parish of King's Winford, Staffordshire; Llanguic, Glamorganshire; New Radford, near Nottingham; Mosley, in the township of Congleton, Cheshire; Hazlewood, in the parish of Driffield, Derbyshire; and at Little Metros, near Tetsworth. The churches to be rebuilt are at Westmeon, Hampshire; Bathwell, Nottinghamshire; and Honly, near Huddersfield. The churches where additional accommodation will be obtained by enlarging, reseating, &c., are at Wichen, Ely; Fowley, Hants; Kirkdale, near Liverpool; Tottington, parish of Bury, Lancashire; Austrey, Warwickshire; Ugmaston, Pembrokeshiire; Full Sutton, Yorkshire; and Upton-cum-Chalvey, near Slough.

NATIONAL SOCIETY.

During the past month upwards of 4.000. have been voted in grants, and twenty-six schools have been received into union.

The Rev. T. Jackson has entered upon his duties as Principal of the Training Establishment at Battersea; and the enlargement and improvements in that establishment are rapidly approaching to completion.

The National Society, looking at the

value of music as an element of educa tion, and of the importance of enabling teachers to impart a knowledge of music, and more especially of Psalmody, has just concluded an arrangement with Mr. Hullah, by which that gentleman will give a systematic course of musical instruction in all the Training Institutions of the Society.

SOCIETY FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE

GOSPEL IN FOREIGN PARTS.

This Society, with a view to make the necessities and the claims of the Colonial Church more generally known, has lately published, at a very low price, the Journals of recent Visitations by the Bishops of Montreal and Toronto. That of the Bishop of Nova Scotia is now passing through the press, and it is intended from time to time to add to the series. In addition to the "Colonial Atlas" and large "Missionary Map of the World," some very convenient and cheap "Cottage Maps" of the great divisions of our Colonial Empire have been recently issued by the Society for promoting Christian Knowledge. We trust that these several publications may be the means of exciting a more general interest in our Colonial and Heathen missions, and thus tend, with God's blessing, to promote the extension of his holy Church.

The 143d Anniversary of the Society will be celebrated in St. Paul's Cathedral, on Thursday, the 2d day of May next. Divine service will commence at halfpast three o'clock. The sermon will be preached by the Lord Bishop of Hereford.
