Gordon for a catalogue of the plants found in Moray, a tract of country including the present county, along with that of Nairn, and likewise parts of Ross, Inverness, and Banff shires. Several specimens have also been communicated to me as having been gathered in Moray; and the Northern Flora frequently mentions Moray, as a locality for different plants. Unfortunately, these general indications are of little avail in making county lists. Mr. Gordon's Catalogue, however, distinguishes certain species by a mark indicating that they are found in the “lower part of Elginshire," lying between the Findhorn and Spey, and bounded "on the south by a line drawn from Craigellachie to Relugas." These are so noticed in the following list. In addition, other localities are named as belonging to this county, which may actually be within the limits of adjacent counties; for in this part of Scotland the shires are so much intersected by each other, as to render it almost impossible for a stranger to assign all the small places to their proper counties.
