I HAVE written this book from the prompting of a desire to do something expressly for the benefit of that class of Protestants among whom I was born and brought up. Most of the books written in English, with the direct object of convincing Protestants of the truth of the Catholic religion, are specially adapted to the use of Episcopalians of highchurch opinions. And, moreover, those Ca tholic writers who make it their aim to convince and convert non-Catholics in general, without special reference to the small body of high-churchmen, usually have in view those who are on the extreme left of Protestantism, or have already lapsed into rationalism.
