tabernacle, God required that they should give it wil. lingly with their heart, Exod. xxv. 2. With the same frame of mind we should do the duties which Christ requires of us. If we do not obey him willingly, he neither regards, nor will reward, our obedience. An involuntary, forced, constrained obedience, is of no account with Christ. Many persons do duty as a task and burden ; and are ready to say of it, What a wearinefs is it ? 'Tis with much regret and reluctancy of fpirit, that they do engage in duty. They had rather let it alone, chan do it. And were they left to their own liberly, they would chuse rather to leave it undone, thani to do it. And hence they secretly wish God had not commanded such and such duties, because they have no heart to them. Nevertheless, from meer constraints of conscience, and fears of damnation, they dare not live in the total omission of those duties. Now such obedience as this, is meer extorted obedience ; no better than what devils, in many cases, do yield to Jesus Christ. (Mar. i. 27.) ....Our obedience then to Christ, should be of another sort, even free and willing obe. dience. And such is the obedience of all them that really and heartily take him to be their Lord. They have an inward inclination and desire to serve Christ Jesus; the bent of their will is that way. And when they find, as they often do, any degree of backwardness and unwillingness unto the service of Christ, that unwillingness is their burden ; but not so, the service of Christ. They do not cry out against the law of Christ, but against the law of Sin in them. Rom. vii. 22, 23, 24. "Tis not the command of Christ, that is grievous to them, but their own corruption. And they do not long to be delivered from the commanding power of Christ, but from the captivating power of fin, whereby they are hindred from doing the will of Christ as they would.
2. We should keep the commandments of Christ universally. All of them muił be observed, without the exception of any. Thus Jefus Christ enjoined the apo
Itles to require all nations, to observe all things what for ever he had commanded them, Match. xxviii. 20. And indeed, unless we make conscience of doing all that Christ requires, he will not accept of any that we do. No obedience is pleasing to Christ, but what is univer. ral. Nor are they fincere Christians, who can conteng themselves with a partial obedience. Such are at best but hypocrites. They that are righteous before God, are such as Zacharias and Elizabeth, who walked in all the ordinances and corninandments of the Lord blamelesly, Luk. i. 6. An upright man is careful to keep both ta. bles of the law; to be religious towards God, and just and charitable towards men. When Christ would give us a character of his unfeigned friends, he describes them from their universal obedience to his commands. Joh. xv. 14. Ye are mný friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. If we live in the willing allowed neg. leet of any known duty, we are not Chris's friends. The heart of a real friend of Christ, is reconciled to, and loves, all the commandments of Christ ; none of them are grievous to him, I Joh. v. 3. He esteems their all, and has respect to them all, Pral. cxix. vi, 128.
3. We should keep the commandments of Christ be. lievingly. Our obedience must be the obedience of faith, Rom. xvi. 26. We must do all in the strength of Chrift; not trusting in our felves..... And when we have done all, we must count ourselves unprofitable servants ; eying his grace alone for acceptance, and looking for the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. Jud. ¥. 21...See then that you cbus keep the commandments of Christ; then may you hope to find that promise made good to you, fob. xiv. 23. If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto bim, and make our abode with him.
Doct. IV. It ought attentively to be considered, that Jesus Christ, in all his faving offices, was given of God the Father to che world....-Behold I have given bim....
God the Father here calls upon us to behold, atten. tively to consider, that 'cis he who has given Jesus Christ, to be a witness, a leader, and a commander to the people ; which titles comprize in them the saving offices of a prophet, priest and king, wherewith Jesus Christ is invested. Under two proposicions we may speak to this Doctrine.
PROP. 1. Jesus Christ in all his faving offices, is given by God the Father, unto the world. Jesus Christ, is the gift of God, unto the world. Job. iv. 10. The Fat bei sent him, to be the saviour of the world, 1 Joh. iv. 14. Here I thall distinctly consider the saviourly offices of Jesus Christ, and thew that in all of them, he is given to the world by God the Father.
1. Jesus Christ as a Prophet, was given of God the Father to the world. I was God the Father, who appointed and called Jesus Christ unto the office of prophet. Deut. xviii. 15. Tbe Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me ; unto him fall ye hearken. This the apostle Peter applies to Jesus Christ, A&t. iii. 22. It was God, that raised him up to be a prophet to the people ; that de. signed and authorised him to this office..... It was God the Father also, that directed and instructed him in the doctrines that he was to preach to the world. Joh. xii. 49, 50. I have not Spoken of myself, but the Father which fent me, he gave me a commandment what I sould say, and what I pould speak.....What foever therefore I speak, even as the Father faid unto me, so I speak.---- It was God the Father also, chat actually lent him into the world, to declare his mind and will to them. Ifai. Ixi. 1. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord bath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent mé to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the cap. tives, This fcripture Jesus Christ applied to himself, as having its fulfilment in bim. Luk. iv. 18.-.-21. And he began to fay unto them, This day is this scripture fulfil.

2. Jesus Christ as a Priest, was given of God the Fa: ther unto the world. From everlasting, God the father designed and ordained him unto this office of a Priest. i Pet. i. 20. Who verily was foreordained before the foun. dation of the world, viz. To redeem us by the facrifice of himself, in the discharge of his priestly office.... God the Facher also prepared that human nature for him, which as an high-priest he was to offer up for us. Ileb. X. 5. A body haft ihou prepared for me, i. e. a body ani. mated with a rational Toul.-.-God the Father also called. him unto, and sent him into the world to execute, che office of a priest in dying for us. Heb. v. 4, 5., No inan taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Cbrist glorified not himself, in be made an high priest, but he thai said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. God his Facher authorized him to that office, and also gave it him as part of his charge, to lay down his life for us. Joh. x, 18. I have power to lay down iný life, this commandment bave I received of my Father.... Yea furcher, God che Fa. ther himself laid the punishment due to our sin upon him. Ifai. liii. 6, 10. Tbe Lord hath laid on bim the iniquity of us all.--. It pleased the Lord to bruise him, he bath put him to grief.
3. Jesus Christ as a King, was given of God the Fa. ther to the world. From eternity, God the Father de. signed him to this kingly office, and passed a decree about it, whereof the Meffiah himself speaks, Pfal. ii. 7. I will declare the decree, i. e..of God the Facher, concerning my being king.....God the Father also anointed him with gifts and graces, fitting him for the discharge of chat royal office. Act. x. 38. Heb. i. 9.---God the Father also actually installed him in the office of a king. Psal. ii. 6. I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion, i. e. made him king over my church, which was signified by the hill of Zion, where the church and people of God allembled for divine worship. guration of Jesus Christ in his kingly office, was at his exaltation to the right hand of God in heaven. Then God the Father fet him upon his throne, and put all. things in subjection to him, Epb. i. 20, 21.-Pfal. viii. 5, 6. Thou baft crowned bim with glory and bonour. Thou madest him to bave dominion over the works of thy hands, ihou hast put all things under bis feet.-Thus for the first proposition, thewing that all saving offices are conferred on Jesus Christ by God the Father, and that in them all he is given by him unto the world.
Prop. 2. It ought co be attentively considered by us, chat Jesus Christ in all his saving offices is thus given to the world by God the Father. Jesus Christ should be pondered upon, as the gift of God the Father, unto the world. It is our duty and interest thus to do. For such à consideration of Jesus Christ, as given of God the Father to the world, will be of special use and advantage to us. Particularly,
1. This will serve to prevent all jealousies concerning the good will of God the Faiber cowards us. We are ape to entertain hard thoughts of God the Father, as if there were someching of averseness and backwardness in him unto our salvation. As for Jesus Christ, we can more easily apprehend a willingness in him to fave, because he has undertaken che salvation of fioners by becoming a mediator between God and us. But as for God the Father, we are more prone to ; suspect him of unwillingness to be reconciled to us, and to receive us into his favour. But all such fufpicions as these are altogether groundless. The heart of God the Father is as much fec for our salvation, as the heart of Jesus Chrift. For it was God the Facher, who invested Jesus Christ with the office of a saviour, and sent him into the world co purchase salvation for us. Hereln he has given a full difcovery of his love to us, and concern for our eternal salvation. i Job. iv, 9, 10, 14.
