THE demand, thus early, for a second edition of this volume, sanctions the hope I ventured to entertain that it might be found one of practical usefulness to the profession. With this feeling, it has been a welcome occupation to me to revise it, and to make the alterations intermediately suggested; improving, as I am willing to believe, the arrangement of one or two of the principal subjects; and illustrating these and others by further examples and arguments. The additions, thus made, are not such as to alter in any material way the form or size of the volume; and more space has been gained for them by the omission of the twenty-fifth chapter of the first edition. The legislative measures recently adopted regarding vaccination, and the facts better determined as to the relation of the vaccine virus to that of small-pox, have rendered unnecessary many of the observations contained in that chapter.
