Hymn 120. L. M.

HEN Bethlehem's shepherds through the night,

Watch'd o'er their flocks by starry light;

Lo! swift to every startled eye,

New streams of glory gild the sky.

On wheels of light, on wings of flame,
The glorious hosts of Zion came;
High heav'n with songs of triumph rung,
While thus they struck their harps and sung:

O Zion! lift thy raptur'd eye,

The long expected hour is uigh ;

Thy King is born, thy Saviour reigns:
Praise him aloud in endless strains.

See, mercy from her golden urn,
Pours a rich stream to them that mourn;
Behold she binds, with tender care,
The bleeding bosom of despair.

He comes to cheer the trembling heart,
Bids satan and his host depart ;
Again the Day-star shines on high,
And man redeem'd shall never die.

TO THE

FIRST LINES OF THE PSALMS.

AS pants the hart for cooling streams
All people that on earth do dwell
Bless God, my soul, thou, Lord, alone
Defend me, Lord, from shame
For thee, O God! our constant praise
From lowest depths of woe ...
Happy the man, whose tender care
Have mercy, Lord, on me

....

......

.....

He's blest, whose sins have pardon gain'd
How blest is he, who ne'er consents
How shall the young preserve their ways
How long wilt thou forget me, Lord?
How good and pleasant must it be
How just and merciful is God!
How blest are they who always keep
I waited meekly for the Lord
Just Judge of heaven, against my foes
Let all the just to God with joy
Lord, hear the voice of my complaint
Lord, who's the happy man that may
Lord, let me know my term of days
My lot is fall'n in that blest land
My soul for help on God relies

.....

No change of time shall ever shock
O all ye people! clap your hands
O come all ye that fear the Lord
O come, loud anthems let us sing
O God! my gracious God, to thee
O God! my heart is fully bent

O Lord of hosts! my King and God

O praise ye the Lord

O praise the Lord in that blest place
O render thanks to God above
The heavens declare thy glory, Lord
The Lord himself, the mighty Lord
This spacious earth is all the Lord's
Through all the changing scenes of life.
Though wicked men grow rich or great
The Lord abounds with tender love

Thou, Lord, by strictest search hast known

HYMNS.

.....

...

Affliction is a stormy deep
Again the day returns of holy rest
All hail the great Redeemer's name
Almighty God, thy wond'rous works
Angels from the realms of glory
A soldier's course from battle's won
Arise, O King of grace, arise
Awake my soul, and with the sun
Be merciful, O God of grace
Behold the mountain of the Lord
Behold the morning sun
Behold! he comes! the promis'd seed
Before Jehovah's awful throne....

Bless'd are the souls that hear and know
Bless'd be the Father and his love
Bread of heav'n, on thee we feed
By thee, O God, the orphan's cry
By thy birth and early years
Christians, awake, lift up your heads
Christ, whose glory fills the skies
Come, Holy Spirit, from above
Come, let us join our cheerful songs
Eternal Beam of light divine
Eternal Pow'r, whose high abode

[merged small][ocr errors]

Father of lights, from whom proceeds
Father of mercies. in thy word
Fierce passions tear the troubl'd mind
From all that dwell below the skies
From Greenland's icy mountains.

......

God is a Spirit, just and wise
God, in the gospel of his Son,
God moves in a mysterious way
God our strength, to thee we pray
Glory to thee, my God, this night
Glory be to God on high

Grateful notes and numbers bring
Great Sovereign of the human heart
Great God! what do I see and hear
Great God, our King, thy various praise
Hark! the herald angels sing
Happy soul, thy days are ended
He comes! he comes! the judge severe
He dies, the friend of sinners dies
How bright these glorious spirits shine
How pleasant, Lord, thy dwellings are
How are thy servants blest, O Lord!
How glorious is our heavenly King
How long, O Lord, shall I complain
In duties and in sufferings too
In innocence I wash my hands..
Jesus Christ is ris'n to-day

Joy to the world! the Lord is come!
Lamb of God that in the bosom
Let us with a gladsome mind
Let peace her olive wand extend
Lo! he comes with clouds descending
Lord of the sabbath, hear our vows
Lord! who dost hear the sinner's cry
Lord, what is man? extremes how wide
Long have we heard the joyful sound.
Love divine, all love excelling.
My God, permit me not to be
May the grace of Christ our Saviour
My soul praise the Lord

O God of wisdom! God of might
O God! how constant is thy love
O God! my strength and fortitude..
Our Lord shall reign where'er the sun
O that my load of sin were gone..
O thou, whose tender mercy hears
O thou, to whose all-searching sight
