To assign a reason for the publication of this selection of Hymns might be unnecessary, if the compositions introduced into it appeared in their original forms; but, in consequence of the liberty which has been taken with them, the Compiler considers that some kind of vindication should be offered; and, for this purpose, he would submit as his motive, a desire to preserve an entire uniformity of doctrinal sentiment, by maintaining throughout "the analogy of faith," and also to adapt them more strictly to public worship, by putting them into the plural number, as tending more directly to blend the sympathies as well as the praises of the Disciples of Christ.
