unto thee in faith, mentioning no other name, pleading no other righteousness, and trusting in no other atonement, than the name, righteousness, and atonement of thy blessed Son, and our adorable Mediator, Jesus Christ. In him we desire to be found; through him we hope for favour with thee and acceptance in thy sight. Blessed be thy goodness for the mercies of the past day; for the blessings of thy Providence, the comforts of thy Spirit, and the privileges we enjoy. We thank thee that we have been protected from danger; and above all, if we have been in any measure withheld by grace from sinning against thee. Sinners we are, and sinned against thee we have, even at the best of times, and in the best of frames; but, O Lord, we would be unfeignedly thankful if thou hast given us a desire to live unto thee. O make those desires effectual through the mighty working of thy Spirit, who is able to subdue even our rebellious hearts to himself. We beseech thee to blot out the transgressions of the week now closing. Look upon the covenant of thy grace; and through the blood of the covenant forgive us all our sins; wash us and we shall be whiter than snow. Shouldest thou deal with us after our sins,

or reward us according to our deserts, alas! we could not stand in thy presence, nor be justified in thy sight. But, though we are guilty and depraved, thou art gracious. We bless thee for that rich provision of grace and glory which thou hast made for thy penitent and believing people in the righteousness, sacrifice, and intercession of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is their advocate with the Father, and the propitiation for their sins. Thou hast delivered thy redeemed from going down into the pit, and hast found a ransom for them. O satisfy us, by thy blessed Spirit, that we are of this happy number. Continue thy goodness towards us this night; make us rest under thy defence, O thou Most High, and to abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Thy mercies to us have been equally great, numerous, and unmerited: may we ever experience thee to be a God of love. Perfect, O Lord, that which concerneth us, and forsake not the work of thine own hands. Bless us with thy presence, grace, and protection. Suffer not the enemy to have an advantage over us; neither let the sons of wickedness approach to hurt us. Be with all thy people every where. Visit especially with thy salvation those whom we desire to

bear upon our hearts before thee. May those who are near and dear to us, be near and dear to God: and whatever separation thy good Providence may make upon earth, grant that we and they may meet with joy at thy right hand in the last great day. May all orders and degrees of men, from the highest to the lowest, fear God, love the truth, and work righteousness. Strengthen and relieve those who labour under any affliction in mind, body, or estate; and make all work together for their good. Preserved, O Lord, by thy gracious mercy, we are come to the close of another week. Since the commencement of it, many of our fellow creatures have left this earthly scene, and have entered upon an eternal state. O God most holy, O God most mighty, suffer us not to close our eyes in death, before we have been enabled to embrace the Lord's Christ in the arms of faith, and to say, "Now, Lord, lettest thou thy servant depart in peace; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation." In all the duties of thy holy day before us, may we look to the Spirit of grace for willingness and power to serve thee faithfully; and may our entire dependance be upon the merits of Jesus Christ the righteous. Lift up the light of thy countenance upon

us may we wait for thy loving kindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple: O make our souls joyful in thy house of prayer. Be thou present in the worshiping assemblies of thy saints; meet thein that desire to meet with thee, and visit with thy salvation those who wait on thee in the ordinances of thy appointment. May such as seek thee be joyful and glad in thee; and find by happy experience, that one day in thy courts is better than a thousand elsewhere; and that thy house is indeed the house of God, and the gate of heaven. Be with all the faithful stewards of thy mysteries who shall minister in thy name. Enable them rightly to divide the Word of Truth, applying it to the hearts and consciences of their hearers, according to their several cases. Pardon the unworthiness of ministers and people; and vouchsafe to own thy glorious gospel, by making it effectual to the salvation of them that hear. Every spiritual and temporal mercy we request for the alone sake of Jesus Christ the righteous. Amen.

FOURTH WEEK.

MEDITATION

For the Lord's Day Morning.

"The righteous shall flourish like the palm "tree; he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. "Those that be planted in the house of the Lord, "shall flourish in the courts of our God.

They

"shall bring forth fruit in old age; they shall "be fat and flourishing: to shew that the Lord "is upright, and there is no unrighteousness in "him." Psalm xcii. 12, 13, 14.

The trees of righteousness grow not in common soil, but in the vineyard and house of the Lord. It is from his grace, by his word and Spirit, that they receive all the spiritual sap and virtue that keeps them alive and makes them fruitful. They put themselves under the divine protection; they fix themselves under divine ordinances; take root in them, and bring forth all their fruit to God's honour and glory.
