towards man. Deliver us from such dangerous dispositions, and from every other temper that would hinder the acceptance of our prayers! May they be the prayers of the upright which are thy delight; and be accepted in thy beloved Son, and our dear Redeemer. Amen.

HYMN

For Friday Evening.

Be still, my heart! these anxious cares
To thee are burdens, thorns and snares:
They cast dishonour on the Lord,
And contradict his gracious word.

Brought safely by his hand thus far;
Why wilt thou now give place to fear?
How canst thou want if he provide?
Or lose thy way with such a guide?

When first before his mercy seat
Thou didst to him thy all commit;
He gave the warrant from that hour
To trust his wisdom, love, and power.

Did ever trouble yet befal,

And he refuse to hear thy call?
And has he not his promise pass'd
That thou shalt overcome at last?

He, who has help'd me hitherto,
Will help me all my journey through ;
And give me daily cause to raise
New Ebenezers to his praise.

Though rough and thorny be the road;
It leads thee home apace to God.
Then count the present trials small;
For heaven will make amends for all.

PRAYER

For Friday Evening.

Most glorious and gracious God, who dwellest in the highest heavens! we desire to adore with the most lively thankfulness thy condescension and love towards the children of men. Though we have left thee, our heavenly Father, and rebelled against thee after thou hadst nourished and brought us up as children, thou dost invite us again to become the sons and daughters of the Lord Almighty. We bless thee for thy gracious declaration, that, to as many as receive Christ Jesus, to them thou givest power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. O let us not receive thy grace in vain! We would come to thee acknow

ledging that we are unworthy to be called thy children; but at the same time relying on thy promised mercy and grace, we would entreat that thou wouldest give us new hearts and create right spirits within us; that thou wouldest adopt us into thy family, and give unto us the spirit of adoption; that we may be followers of thee as dear children, conformed to the image of thy beloved Son, who is the firstborn among many brethren.

Make us

Heavenly Father, let thy kingdom of grace come in our hearts; and make us temples of the Holy Ghost. Let no iniquity have dominion over us. willing in the day of thy power. Rule in us by the power of thy truth and may the truth make us free, translating us out of the kingdom of Satan into the kingdom of thy dear Son. O give to each of us grace to know and do thy will as it is done in heaven. May we be filled with the knowledge of thy will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding and make us perfect in every good word and work. Let the time past of our lives suffice us to have wrought the will of the flesh.

Grant, O Lord, we beseech thee, that the kingdom of thy grace may come more and more in our own land. Here let thy

word have free course and be glorified. May all who agree in the truth of thy holy word, live in unity and godly love; truly serving thee in righteousness and holiness. May all orders and degrees of men serve thee in their several callings, to the discouragement of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of true religion and virtue.

And grant, O heavenly Father, that the kingdoms of this world may soon become the kingdoms of our God and of his Christ may all be taught of God, and know thee, from the least to the greatest: and all the kindreds of the nations worship before thee.

And when thy kingdom of glory shall come, may we be of their happy number who look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus, to come in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. O make us ready for it, that we may lift up our heads with joy; knowing that our complete redemption draweth nigh. Mercifully hear these our prayers, and grant us every needful blessing for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

MEDITATION

For Saturday Morning.

"It is finished." John xix. 30.

These are the last words of Jesus; and may not every penitent believer say, they contain all my salvation. Redeeming love has now finished its glorious plan, and the triumph of the cross is completed.

While angels desire to look into these things, let our faith dwell upon their important meaning. Then all the prophesies and promises relating to this great event were fulfilled. All the types and figures of the Mosaic dispensation were answered; and the dispensation itself was at an end. Then the work of the Redeemer's public ministry was accomplished: and his obedience completed. The true and proper atonement for sin was then made; and the new and living way opened for the penitent and believing sinner. And then did infinite wisdom, justice, and mercy, shine forth in their brightest glory. The awakened sinner, who feels himself exposed to the reproaches of conscience, the threatenings of the divine law, and the
