all be thine in that day when thou shalt make up thy jewels; when thou shalt return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not. And at length may we all meet around thy throne, and unite in praising, loving, and enjoying Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, for ever and ever. Amen.

HYMN

For the Lord's Day Evening.
Blest Jesus, source of grace divine,
What soul refreshing streams are thine!
O bring these healing waters nigh,
Or we must faint, and fall, and die.

No traveller through desert lands,
'Midst scorching suns and burning sands,
More eager longs for cooling rain;
Or pants the living spring to gain.

Our longing souls aloud would sing,
Spring up, celestial fountain, spring;
To a redundant river flow,

And cheer this thirsty land below.

May these blest waters near my side,
Through all the desert gently glide;
Then, in Emanuel's land above,
Spread to a sea of joy and love.

PRAYER

For the Lord's Day Evening.

O almighty God, and heavenly Father, from whom cometh down every good and perfect gift! we come to thee as the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in him the God of all comfort and the source of all blessedness. What grace and mercy hast thou bestowed on us sinful dust and ashes! Who, and what are we, that the Lord of Hosts should condescend to draw us nigh unto himself! that thou shouldest permit us to find a place in thy house, and number us amongst thy worshippers! How great is our privilege in being allowed to hear and read thy word to join with thy people in prayer and praise; and in having the unsearchable riches of Christ opened to our impoverished souls!

But, O Lord, we lament that we have been so unworthy of thy goodness towards us; so vain and thoughtless, so dull and lifeless, so wandering and distracted. How little of thy word has been treasured up in our hearts! how little have we delighted in the truths of Christ; or felt the power

of his grace and love; or perceived the evil of sin and the beauty of holiness! Forgive, we beseech thee, the iniquities of our holy things; and sprinkle our persons and services with the all-atoning blood of Jesus.

We are drawing near to the close of thy blessed day; O let not the means of grace which it has afforded us be altogether lost. O that we may long retain its holy influences. May the good seed of thy word take root in our hearts, and bring forth the fruits of righteousness in our tempers, lives, and conversation. O give us more love to thyself, and to Jesus Christ the Son of thy love; and more love to our fellow creatures for Jesu's sake. May we hate sin more than ever; be more watchful against every temptation of Satan and the world, and more resolute in mortifying every corruption of our hearts. Let thy grace be sufficient for us, and thy strength be made perfect in our weakness.

Blessed be thy name, O Lord, that thou hast not utterly forsaken thine own ordinances. We praise thee for any breathings of soul towards thee, for any holy exercises of faith and love, of submission and obedience, of repentance and self-dedication : for any delight we have experienced in thy worship and service, both in the solemn

assembly of thy saints and in devout retirement. O carry on in us thy good work, till at length it be finished in heavenly joy and praise in thy immediate presence. Let the Saviour become increasingly precious to us all for that great love wherewith he loved us, and the inestimable benefits he has by his blood-shedding obtained for us. May his name be known, and his salvation rejoiced in throughout the whole earth.

May all who are dear to us partake of this great salvation. O thou Shepherd and Bishop of souls, bring back to thine own self those who are still as sheep going astray. Teach trangressors thy ways, and let sinners be converted unto thee.

We bless thee, O Lord, that thy tabernacle is still amongst us; and that there still remains the keeping of a sabbath to the people of God. May thy day be more devoutly hallowed, and thy sanctuary increasingly reverenced. And hasten, we humbly beseech thee, the fulfilment of thy gracious promise, that "all the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord, and all the kindreds of the nations worship before thee." Hear, O Lord, these our supplications and intercessions, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.

MEDITATION

For Monday Morning.

:

and it fell not,

"Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house and it fell, and great was the fall of it." Matt. vii. 24-27.

We have every one of us a house to build, and that house is our hope for heaven. Our great business is to secure a title to the happiness of heaven; that when we fail, we may be received into everlasting habitations. There is a rock provided for us to build upon, and that rock is Christ. The Church is built upon this rock; and so is every believer. We must ground our hope for heaven upon the fulness of his sacrifice and merits for the pardon of sin and eternal life, on the power of his Spirit for the sanctification of our nature, and the prevalency of his intercession for our
