and in thy sight, and are no more worthy to be called thy children. We remember with contrition of soul, how many obligations thou hast laid upon us to love and serve thee; how often have we acknowledged the wisdom and goodness of thy commands, and promised and vowed to conform ourselves to them. Yet, again and again, has the slightest temptation drawn us aside from thy way. But again would we return unto thee, saying, take away from us all iniquity, receive us graciously, and love us freely: withdraw not the sweet influences of thy Holy Spirit from thy unworthy servants, who entirely confide in thy mercy; hide not thy face from us; put not thy servants away in anger. Hast thou not promised to give power to the faint, and to increase the strength of them that have no might? We desire not only pardon of our sins, but a divine power to enable us to subdue them; and that our repentance may be such as shall not need to be repented of. We desire no peace, O Lord, but in keeping thy law. O strengthen us, we beseech thee, in this holy disposition; that we may be kept in thy favour and love, by a happy agreement with thy will and pleasure in all things. Sanctify our understanding, that we may

rightly perceive thy holy truths, and fully apprehend them: sanctify our memory, that we may keep in mind all that we know of thee, and of thy blessed will revealed to us in Christ Jesus our Lord. Sanctify our will, that it may cheerfully embrace, and entirely consent to thine in all things; and sanctify all our affections, that we may love thee with all our heart, and soul and strength, and delight in thee more than in all the pleasures of this life. Sanctify our passions, that we may be angry at nothing so much as having displeased thee. Sanctify us throughout in body, as well as in spirit, that we may possess it in holiness and honour; and may all our senses administer occasion to our minds to remember thee, to praise thee, and to bless thee. Fortify our wills with the power of thy divine love, that we may overcome all sensual affections; and possess us with such a lively hope of those good things which Christ has promised in the life to come, that it may make us active and zealous, steadfast and unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord; knowing that our labour shall not be in vain in the Lord. Thou knowest the secrets of all hearts; let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us according as we hope in thee;

enable us to cleave unto thee with full

purpose of heart. "O cast us not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Create in us clean hearts, and renew right spirits within us. Make

our hearts sound in thy statutes, that we may never be ashamed. Keep back thy servants also from presumptuous sins, let them not have dominion over us; let the words of our mouths, and the meditations of our hearts, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, our strength, and our Redeemer." Amen.

HYMN

For Tuesday Evening.

Dread Sovereign! let my evening song
Like holy incense rise;
Assist the offerings of my tongue
To reach the lofty skies.

Through all the dangers of the day
Thy hand was still my guard;
And still to drive my wants away,
Thy mercy stood prepar'd.

Perpetual blessings from above
Encompass me around;

But Oh! how few returns of love
Hath my Creator found.

What have I done for him that died
To save my wretched soul;
How are my follies multiply'd
Fast as my minutes roll!

Lord, with this guilty heart of mine
To thy dear cross I flee;
And to thy grace my soul resign,
To be renew'd by thee.

Thus with my thoughts compos'd to peace,
I give my eyes to sleep;
Thy hand in safety keeps my days,
And will my slumbers keep.

PRAYER

For Tuesday Evening.

O Father of mercies, the fountain of all the good things we enjoy at present, and the hope of our souls for ever and ever! again would we return unto thee, blessing, and glory, and honour, and praise, for all thy goodness towards us. Blessed be thy name for thy renewed kindness to us, throughout the day past, in our spiritual and temporal concerns; and for the liberty thou now grantest us of drawing near unto

thee. Pardon, O Lord, whatsoever thou hast seen in us in thought, word, and deed, contrary to thy holy law; and grant us an earnest desire to approve ourselves to thee in all well-doing. It is but just and reasonable that we should follow thy will, and not our own; and, in a grateful sense of our obligations to thee, we ought to employ all our powers of soul and body to thy glory. And such is the goodness of thy will, that to be absolutely led and governed by it, is our highest happiness, and our most reasonable service. Make us most deeply sensible, O Lord, how greatly we are indebted to thee both for teaching us by Christ Jesus, and also strongly obliging us to exercise ourselves in all godliness, purity, righteousness, humility, goodness, and truth. We thank thee for the holy example he has condescended to set us; for the hope thou hast given us by his blood; for the gracious aids of thy Spirit to enable us to imitate and obey him; and for the exceeding great and precious promises of grace here, and eternal glory hereafter, which he has given us, to encourage us to follow him willingly and cheerfully even unto death. O that we may have a lively and steadfast faith in his word, continually
