ANGELS your march oppose,
Who still in strength excel,

Your secret, sworn, eternal foes,
Countless, invisible:

With rage that never ends,
Their hellish arts they try;
Legions of dire, malicious ñiends,
And spirits enthron'd on high.

2 On earth the usurpers reign,
Exert their baneful power;
O'er the poor fallen sons of men
They tyrannize their hour:
But shall believers fear?
But shall believers fly?

Or see the bloody cross appear,
And all their powers defy?

3

Jesu's tremendous name
Puts all our foes to flight!
Jesus, the meek, the angry Lamb,
A lion is in fight.

By all hell's host withstood,
We all hell's host o'erthrow:
And conquering them thro' Jesu's blood,

We on to conquer go.

4 Our Captain leads us on;
He beckons from the skies,
And reaches out a starry crown,
And bids us take the prize.
"Be faithful unto death;
"Partake my victory,

"And thou shalt wear this glorious wreath,

"And thou shalt reign with me.”

HYMN 316.

[L. M.]

ETERNAL Power, whose high abode

Becomes the grandeur of a God; Infinite lengths, beyond the bounds Where stars revolve their little rounds: 2 Thee, while the first archangel sings, He hides his face behind his wings: And ranks of shining thrones around Fall worshipping, and spread the ground.

3 Lord, what shall earth and ashes do? We would adore our Maker too! From sin and dust to thee we ery, The Great, the Holy, and the High! 4 Earth from afar hath heard thy fame, And worms have learnt to lisp thy

name;

But, O! the glories of thy mind

Leave all our soaring thoughts behind ! 5 God is in heaven, and men helow; Be short our tunes, our words be few! A solemn reverence checks cur songs, And praise sits silent on our tongues.

HYMN 317.

[L. M.]

AH, Lord, with trembling I confess,

gracious soul may fall from

grace!

The salt may lose its seasoning power,
And never, never find it more!

2 Lest that my fearful case should be,
Each moment knit my soul to thee;
And lead me to the mount above,
Thro' the low vale of humble love,

CHARGE to keep I have,

AA God to glorify;

A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky;

To serve the present age,
My calling to fulfil:

O may it all my powers engage
To do my Master's will!

Arm me with jealous care,
As in thy sight to live;

And, O! thy servant, Lord, prepare
The strict account to give :
Help me to watch and pray,
And on thyself rely:
Assur'd, if I my trust betray,
I shall for ever die.

ERVANT of all, to toil for man
Thou didst not, Lord, refuse;
Thy Majesty did not disdain
To be employ'd for us!

2 Thy bright example I pursue:
To thee in all things rise:
May all I think, or speak, or do,
Be one great sacrifice.

3 Careless through outward cares I go,
From all destraction free;
My hands are but engag'd belcw,
My heart is still with thee.

G. By whose sufficient grace,

NOD of almighty love,

I lift my heart to things above,
And humbly seek thy face:
Through Jesus Christ the Just,
My faint desires receive!
And let me in thy goodness trust,
And to thy glory live.

2

Whate'er I say or do,

Thy glory be my aim;

My offerings all be offer'd through
The ever-blessed Name!

Jesus, my single eye

Be fixt on thee alone:

Thy name be prais'd on earth, on high: Thy will by all be done!
