admirably executed performance, and of the greatest service to Christianity.

2d. J. D. Michaelis, Professor in the University of Göttingen, who died in 1791. His work on the New Testament has been translated by the learned Dr. Marsh, bishop of Peterborough.

3d. Dr. OWEN, born 1715, died in 1795, aged 80 years. His work on the Gospels is praised by Dr. Percy as ingenious, though fallacious, in some points; and it is not, here, generally followed, Dr. Lardner is, for the most part, the criterion; yet Owen is by no means to be disregarded, and, if attentively read, though not implicitly believed, it is calculated to throw light upon that interesting subject to which it refers.

This work is divided into the Gospels and Epistles the former including the Acts of the Apostles, the latter the Revelation. The first column shews the probable date at which it was written; second, the name of the book; third, where and by whom it was written; fourth, the initial letter of the historian, on whose authority the account is given. — F. J. P.

THE

ANATOMY OF GEOGRAPHY;

FROM

WALKER, AND SALMON, AND BALDWIN'S MAPS.

BY F. J. POST.

1831.

NOTE. These works contain notices of several hundred places in those countries to which they refer ; their latitude and longitude; their distances from place to place; the rise and fall of the various rivers connected with the countries through which they pass; and a few anecdotes of some places of note. Altogether they are remarkable specimens of neatness, and close application in the pursuit of the particular objects which the author had marked out for his research. -ED.

A SHORT SYSTEM

OF

PRACTICAL GEOMETRY:

DIGESTED FROM

EUCLID, BONNYCASTLE, DARLEY, &c.

BY F. J. POST.

THE THIRD EDITION, IMPROVED.

"LABOR OMNIA VINCIT."

ISLINGTON, 1831.

PREFACE. The first edition contained twenty

six of Darley's problems. The second edition

contained forty-four problems. In this edition several have been added. The size has been improved; the lines are more distinct, and the figures are correctly and beautifully drawn. The whole is distinguished for brevity, perspicuity, and elegance. In a work treating of practical geometry, axioms may seem useless, but they lead to correct demonstrations, which it is intended to incorporate with the notes. After going through this work, the learner may proceed through my geometry and algebra, the latter being preceded by my arithmetic. The author concludes with a sense of the favour of having prefixed to his work names as good as humble. -F. J. P.

NOTE. This work contains many geometrical problems, with the figures neatly drawn. Amongst his private studies we find another book, with a considerable number of problems in algebra, and a few in logarithms, all worked out with much labour and correctness. Of "Problems producing adfected quadratics," he had solved as far as problem 23, in Bland. On one of these problems, he has made the following significant remark:-"Not having any knowledge of the popular game of cards, I met with some difficulty
