hear, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest it, that we may joyfully hold fast the blessed hope of eternal life which thou hast given to us, in and through thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this,

O GOD, Father of all mercies, so strengthen us with might by thy Spirit, through thy word, that we may have victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil. Enable us to comprehend the doctrines, apply the precepts, be comforted by the promises, instructed by the examples, and warned by the admonitions of holy Scripture, that it may turn to the health and life of our disordered souls. Especially, &c. Thus may we be built up into the stature of the perfect man in Christ Jesus, who with thee and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth, one God, world without end. Amen.

A CONFESSION.

REMEMBER not, O Lord, our iniquities, nor the iniquities of our forefathers. Spare us, O good Lord, spare thy people who confess their sins unto thee. Forgive whatever thou hast hitherto, seen amiss in any of us; and raise us up to newness of life, to serve, love, and praise thee evermore, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A GENERAL PRAYER.

O MOST mighty God and merciful Father, the God of all comfort, replenish our barren souls and revive our fainting spirits out of thine own abundant ful

ness of joy and goodness. May we rejoice this day in thy salvation. Keep us from a light and trifling spirit; stir up in us good desires; raise our thoughts to things above. Quicken our pursuit of the heavenly inheritance. Enable us to walk with thee, and form our whole life, this and every day, to an holy and heavenly conversation. Keep us especially from vain and sinful discourse, and from whatever may furnish opportunities of successful assault to our spiritual adversaries, or grieve thy Holy Spirit. Enlighten our understandings, sanctify our wills, mortify our fleshly members, and destroy in us the old man. Work in us a reverential fear of thy power, an influential love of thy goodness, a self-denying zeal for thy glory, and a devout thirsting after more of thy grace. Keep us in the spirit of prayer and supplication throughout this day, but especially while in thy house. Make thy word read or preached profitable to our souls' advancement in true holiness. Grant that we may find thee in thy holy temple and be able to say, It was good to be there. We ask these mercies for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Or this,

O ALMIGHTY God, Creator and Redeemer of Mankind, give us grace to glorify thee with our bodies and our spirits which are thine, by an entire and hearty surrender of ourselves to thy blessed service. May we esteem and find it perfect freedom, walking without weariness in the way of thy

testimonies. Establish our hearts in thy love, and grant us to know more and more from our own sweet experience, that God sent his Son to bless us, by turning every one of us far from our iniquities. Be graciously present with us in public and in private, especially in the hour of prayer. Enable us to obtain light, comfort, and instruction in righteousness from all the sacred ordinances of thine own appointment. May we have grace so to restrain our words and actions, that we may not find our own pleasure this day, but do thine, and aim to glorify thee. Oh! how many are Our wants! Lord, relieve them. Our sins are more in number than the hairs of our head! Lord, pardon them. Our mercies are past summing up! Lord, give us grateful hearts for them. O Christ, speak to us thy peace, that we may be calm, recollected, and joyful in thee, through the whole of this day, for thy name's sake. Amen.

AN INTERCESSORY PRAYER FOR THE MINISTERS AND CONGREGATIONS OF THE CHURCH.

O FATHER of mercies, we beseech thee this day specially to bless all that minister in holy things. Multiply to them the gifts and graces of the Holy Ghost. Make them faithful, wise, and affectionate, meek, patient, and laborious, taking heed to themselves and to the flocks over which thou hast made them overseers, feeding the church of God, purchased with his own blood. We especially pray for him who may minister the word to us this day. And be with all Christian congregations in every part of the earth, making the word profitable to the conviction, conversion, instruction, and consolation of the hearers, as each may need. We ask these mercies for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.

Or this,

ALMIGHTY God, look mercifully upon thy church, and so guide and govern the minds of thy servants the ministers of thy word and ordinances, that they may this day in their several ministrations, set forth thy glory, and forward the salvation of souls. Keep them from the fear of man, the desires of human applause, and from omission and negligence in holding forth Christ and him crucified as the way, the truth, and the life. May thy gospel be glorified unto the ends of the earth, and all nations brought into thy fold, under the one Shepherd Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and

the Holy Ghost, be all glory and praise, now and for ever.

Amen.

A PRAYER TO BE ADDED BEFORE THE HOLY

COMMUNION.

LORD of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things, grant to us in coming to thy holy table this day, a truly contrite spirit, and lively faith. May we verily and indeed eat thy flesh, and drink thy blood, and receive thee into our hearts, to abide with us for ever. Increase and confirm to us thy grace; nourish us with all goodness, of thy great mercy keep us in the same, and prepare us to be thy guests at thy table in thy kingdom, O gracious Jesus, who with the Father and the Holy Ghost, art ever, one God, world without end.

Amen.

A THANKSGIVING.

O MOST gracious and everliving God, we yield thee unfeigned praise for all thy mercies, especially that thou now callest us to communion with thyself, on another of thine own days, and in thy house of prayer. We thank thee for the privilege of being born in a Christian land, for the free use of our Bibles, and abundant means of grace, especially for the faithful preaching of thy word. But above all thy mercies, for free justification through the blood of thy most dear Son, and sanctification by thy Holy Spirit. Enable us this and every day to live in preparation for that heavenly Rest, into which our Saviour Christ hath gone before, where he now
