O Lord, mercifully hear our cry when we upon thee.

FIRST COLLECT FOR ACCEPTANCE OF OUR

PRAYERS.

O LORD God, from whom the preparation of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue do proceed, dispose all our hearts to fervent praise and prayer, that with one mind and one mouth we may glorify thee. Grant us a true knowledge of our necessities, and unfeigned dependance on thy providence and grace. Hear us, O Lord, in the multitude of thy mercy, and in the truth of thy salvation succour us, for the honour of Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer.

Or this,

Amen.

O GOD, merciful Father, giver of all good gifts, enable us to come to thy mercy-seat, heartily adoring thee that we find it, what from our feebleness and great vileness we so much need. Direct our desires, meet and relieve our wants, and let the commandment come forth from thy presence to preserve, help, and bless us all, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SECOND COLLECT, FOR A BLESSING ON THE
WORD OF GOD.

O BLESSED Lord, who causedst all things that were written aforetime, to be written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope, grant that the blessed Spirit of light and truth may ingraft the word we

have been hearing this day inwardly in all our hearts. Especially, &c. Fill us with joy and peace in believing. Give us what we have not, that we may be perfect and complete in the will of God. Enable us to hold fast that we have, that no man take our crown; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Or this,

WE beseech thee, O Lord, to pour thy grace into all our hearts, that we who have this day been hearers of thy word, may experience the blessedness thou hast pronounced on those who are also doers of it. Especially, &c. Grant that, daily advancing in virtue and godliness of living, we may reflect the light of thy truth in our lives and conversation, and finally attain to thy heavenly glory, who with the Father and the Holy Ghost, art one God, world without end. Amen.

upon us.

A CONFESSION.

ALMIGHTY God, judge of all men, have mercy Pardon, for Christ's sake, all that thou hast seen in us this day contrary to thy holy will. We have not served thee as we ought in public or in private; we have been cold and heartless in worshipping thee, negligent in hearing thy word, and too unmindful of thy glory. Pardon the unbelief, self-will, self-righteousness, and all evil that cleaves to our holy duties, and quicken us henceforth truly and heartily to serve thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A GENERAL PRAYER.

ALMIGHTY God, author and giver of all good things, grant us this evening, thy peace, that we may joyfully rest in thee from all sin and anxious care. Having our feet firmly fixed on Christ the rock of our salvation, may we have increasing victory over all the enemies of our souls. Confirm and increase in us those graces of the Holy Spirit, by which we may glorify thee and evidence our own adoption into thy family. Subdue in us all pride, and self-sufficiency; with all carnal, selfish, and polluting desires and pursuits. Cause us to rise more and more into the mind that was in Christ, that we may be approved both of God and man, as holy and beloved, partakers of the benefit. May we so follow after to apprehend that for which also we are apprehended of Christ Jesus, that we may be ever found meet for that heavenly kingdom which he hath prepared for those that love him. Grant this for his sake, to whom, with thee, and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory. Amen.

Or this,

HOLY, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which wast, and art, and art to come, have mercy upon us thy feeble and evil creatures, and grant us thy blessing. Lead us in the way of righteousness and eternal life. May our lives prove us true Christians, and our whole temper and conversation exhibit us partakers of the Holy Ghost. Direct us into the love of God. Increase our faith. Let

our hope be as an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast. Suffer not our steps to slip, through our own weakness and sin, the snares of Satan, or the allurements of the world. O be thou our keeper, guardian, and guide unto death, and finally, our

portion and eternal great reward, through Jesus Christ, our mediator and advocate.

Amen.

A PRAYER FOR TEMPORAL BLESSINGS.

SATISFY us with thy mercy, we beseech thee, O Lord: and of thy great goodness preserve us from all the perils and dangers of the coming nightseason. Grant us refreshing rest. Continue to us life and health. Sanctify both prosperity and adversity to our growth in grace, and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Let thy fatherly blessing be upon us now and evermore, for the sake of our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.
