E

TO TEACHERS.-At a recent meeting of the Committee of the British and Foreign School Society it was resolved

"That the Educational Record be made use of, to a larger extent than hitherto, as a medium of communication with British School Teachers; and that to this end it be forwarded, gratuitously, to all who may wish to receive it."

The "Revised Code for 1868," price 3d., by post; 5d. per copy, is now on sale at the Depository. The Class Lists of the late Examination, the Questions then set, and the Syllabus of the next Examination, are also published. Copies can be procured through the Depository, price 6d. ; or, post free, 7d. each.

The Secretary desires to thank those teachers who have so kindly and promptly responded to his request for information, and to say that any further help towards obtaining a complete register of British schools and British school teachers will be highly valued. Changes affecting the position and prospects of British school teachers will henceforward be chronicled in the Record with as much completeness as possible.

For the information of those who may be contemplating the establishment of new schools, the Secretary desires to collect a portfolio of designs, specifications, &c., and will feel very much obliged for any plans of schools which are found thoroughly suitable, and any other information bearing on the economical questions connected with school buildings and fittings.

A more extended catalogue of school books and materials is also in preparation. With a view to the revision and perfection of the catalogue, the Secretary will be glad to receive specimen copies (with price lists) of any approved school appliances.

Communications from Teachers and School Managers in the form of queries, and correspondence on subjects of practical bearing upon the work of teaching, will be cordially welcomed. All such communications, and.. books for notice, should be addressed to the Editor, British and Foreign School Society, Borough Road, London, S.E.

RECENT EDUCATIONAL PUBLICATIONS.

Curtis's Junior Reader. Edited by J. C. CURTIS, B.A. Depository, Borough Road. This capital little reading book is full of selections, beautiful in style, and excellent in spirit. The author has placed under contribution the works of the best writers for children-notably of Hans Andersen, Abbott, and the authors of "Poems written for a Child." The vivid interest so essential in a reading book, marks most of the extracts, but is specially provided in the stories of Natural History and Adventure. Some old favourites will be found here, and the author has been fortunate in securing many excellent pieces new to reading books. Among the best of these are the beautiful poems "In the Fields," "Wind and Sea," and the charming, piquant portraits of "Wasp" and "Toby," by Dr. Brown. The book is such as children love.

E. B.

Le Petit Grammairien. By T. PAGLIARDINI. Hodder and Stoughton. This little book contains a carefully arranged outline of French grammar, and a series of reading exercises. We cordially recommend it as an excellent text-book for young pupils.

Initiatory Drawing Copies. By F. T. READ. Depository, Borough Road. -These copies consist of thirty figures, ranging from the simplest forms to outlines of vases, executed from Wedgwood and Minton's designs. They will be found an excellent introduction to the actual drawing from models, required by the Art Department. We happen to know that in one school, where they are in use, the success of the pupils at the Art Examination has been almost unexampled.

The Grammatical Copy Book, No. 1. By J. B. MILLARD. John Heywood. The paper is good, and the copies are well executed.

THE

EDUCATIONAL RECORD.

BRITISH AND FOREIGN SCHOOL SOCIETY.

TRAINING DEPARTMENT.

THE Committee met the students at STOCKWELL on Wednesday, December 3rd, when ROBERT ALSOP, Esq., occupied the chair, and was surrounded by a goodly number of teachers who had been students in previous years. The special features of the meeting were carefully preserved-viz., examination, social intercourse, and farewell greeting.

1. The Examination comprised an inspection of needlework, maps, and drawings in one of the class-rooms; an oral examination in Scripture knowledge, the singing of several pieces, sacred and secular, by the students collectively; and the reading, on the part of individual students, of selected answers to certain of the questions put at the College Examinations in School Management, English Language, History, Geography and Domestic Economy. General satisfaction. was expressed with the completeness and thoroughness of the answers; some, such as the directions for providing a poor man's dinner most economically, and for dusting a drawing-room with least bustle and largest results, exciting both interest and amusement.

2. The social character of the meeting was secured by the arrangement of the tea-room, the Committee mixing freely with the present and former students, and giving words of cheer and sympathy. The hour and a half thus occupied during the evening was found by all to be pleasant and profitable.

3. Certificates of honour were presented to the students who have entitled themselves to some mark of appreciation of their diligence, efficiency as teachers, and general conduct during their two years' term of study; and earnest and impressive addresses were given by P. Campbell, Esq., Mrs. Alsop, and the Chairman.

The meeting was closed with a devotional service at a quarter to nine o'clock..
