nating style of manners was introduced to the General when he took her hand with a gentle and prolonged grasp, and gracefully lifted it to his lips with a smack that was audible. The reception was full of little incidents of interest. La Fayette was the idol. Curiosity stood on tiptoe during the ceremonies. Everybody was pleased and in good humor. The reception closed with a grand ball.

La Fayette, as Mrs. Norton remembers him, was an accomplished gentleman, of medium height and symmetrical proportions, and for a man of his advanced age, remarkably vigorous. She thinks she is in all probability the only person now living in Cleveland, who enjoys the honor of having been introduced to General La Fayette. She was born in 1803, in the city of New York where she was educated. In 1822 she married Captain James Norton, who died in 1861. They came to the Western Reserve in 1840. Her husband soon became well known to the citizens of the lake region as the genial captain of the steamboat United States and afterwards of the steamboat General Porter. Mrs. Norton still enjoys comfortable health, and is a lady very much respected and a general favorite among her many friends.

The following resolution was introduced by Hon. A. J. Williams :

Resolved, That we are profoundly grateful that our venerable and beloved president has been spared to be with us and preside over our meeting to-day, and that we unite in the most earnest and devout prayer that he may be spared to us many years to come.

The question on the adoption of the resolution was put by Vice President Hutchins, and a great chorus of ayes went up.

Afterwards a number of venerable ladies and gentlemen were introduced. Among them were Mrs. Sommers, ninety years old last January, widow of the late Dr. Sommers, and Mrs. Cahoon, eighty-seven years of age, widow of the late Joel B. Cahoon, who came to the Reserve in 1810. Mr. Youngs L. Morgan, eighty-nine years old, came to the Reserve in 1811, and Mr. John Doan, of Collamer, eighty-nine years old, came to the Reserve in 1801, and who is the oldest resident of the county, now living, it is believed. The exercises were then con

cluded by singing the Doxology, led by Mr. L. R. Prentiss, in a clear distinct voice, who is now eighty-three years of age, and came to the Reserve in 1820. These aged persons seemed to enjoy good health, and appeared bright, happy and cheerful. They have all lived useful lives. God bless them!
