comes forth a little horn, of which the prophecy thus fpeaks.

C: 8. v.9. And out of one of them came forth a litile horn, which waxed exceeding great toward the South, and toward the East, and toward the pleasant land.

V. 10. And it waxed great even to the hot of Heaven, and it caft down fome of the host and of the fears to the ground, and ftamped upon them.

11. Yea, he magnified himself, even to the Prince of the hoft, and by him the daily facrifice was taken away, and the place of his fanctuary was caft

down.

12. And an hoft was given him against the daily facrifice by reafon of tranfgreffion, and it caft down the truth to the ground, and it practised and proSpered.

13. Then I heard one Saint speaking, and another Saint faid unto that certain Saint which spake, How long shall be the vifion concerning the daily facrifice, and the tranfgreffion of defolation, to give both the fanctuary ana the host to be trodden under foot?

14. And he faid unto me, unto two thousand and 300. days, then shall the fanctuary be cleanfed?

Tis alfo to the fame Antiochus that we must refer the whole 12th Chapt. of the fame book of Daniels

C. 12. v. r. And at that time shall Michael ftand. up, the great Prince, which standeth for the children of thy people, and there shall be a time of trouble, fuch as never was fince there was a Nation, even to that fame time; and at that time shall thy people be deliver'd, every one that shall be found written in the book.

4. But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and feal the book even to the time of the end: many to and fro, and knowledge shall be increas'd.

5. Then I Daniel looked, and behold there food other two, the one on this fide of the bank of the ri ver, and the other on that fide of the bank of the river.

6. And one faid to the man clothed in linnen which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of thefe wonders?

7. And I heard the man clothed in linnen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and fware by him that liveth for ever, that it shall be for a time, times, and a half; and when he shall have accomplished to fcatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

8. And I heard, but I understood not. Then faid I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?

9. And he said, Go thy way, Daniel, for the words are clofed up, and fealed, till the time of the end.

10. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried, but the wicked shall do wickedly, and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wife shall understand.

As Interpreters agree, that these Prophecies in the literal meaning of them are concerning Antiochus Epiphanes, the great perfecutor of the Jews and the true Religion; fo almost all agree alfo, that this myftically referrs to Antichrift. And 'tis a truth, I do not at all doubt of. Antiochus was a type of Antichrift: we fhall fee fuch clear proofs of it, that it will not be poffible to doubt of it. As the principle is commonly perceived. I will fuppofe it, and will not give my felf the trouble to prove it, any otherwife than in applying all that to Antichrift that is faid of Antiochus. I will only make fome remarks to confirm this truth.

I. We must obferve that all the things, that Both good were to happen under the New Teftament, had and bad their types under the Old. It is not only fefus N. Tefta. Christ that had types forhis perfon, forhis offices, for had their his good works; his enemies alfo have had their types untypes. The actions of the Saints have been typi- old. cal; the victories of Sampfon over the Philiftins, thofe of David over Goliah, were types of the vi&tories of Jefus Chrift. All the world believes it, and no one doubts it. It must be acknowledged alfo, that the criminal actions of eminent perfons have been typical likewife. If on one hand there have been perfons and actions typical of the good, there have been alfo perfons and actions typical of the evil. Cain was a type of the enemies of Jefus Chrift coming of the feed of the woman, he was a type of the feed of the Serpent; and his action against his brother was a typical fin, that reprefenteth the perfecution, which the Devil

was to bring upon Jefus Chrift and his Church. The fin of Efau, that defpifed the right of primogeniture, and fold it for a mefs of broth, was a ype of thofe prophane ones, that renounce the benefits of the World to come, for the vanities of this present World. Lots wife, that looked towards Sodom, and the Ifraelites that turn'd their eyes towards Egypt, after they were gone forth from it, are types of thofe miferable perfons, who after they have been drawn from fin by the grace of Jefus Chrift, are eager after the World from which they were departed, and return to it again.

As therefore Jefus Chrift hath had his types, without doubt Antichrift had his too, and that in great number. Cain, Goliaḥ, Pharaoh,Nebuchadnezzar, and the other oppreffors of the truth and the faithful, have been types of Antichrift. Among these types there was not any one more noted and more plain than Antiochus, who made the continual facrifice ceafe for three years and a half, who made. the Church defolate, who made almoft the whole Nation fall into Apoftacy, who prophaned the Temple, and cruelly perfecuted those that perfevered in the true Religion. So that as in the types of Jefus Chrift we feek for and find his Characters, in like manner in Antiochus and that which the Prophecies fay of him, we may find the Characters of Antichrif.

But we muft obferve, there are two forts of Prophecies; one that directly refpe&t the principal fubject, the other that refpect it only mediately and indirectly, and by the means of fome type, to which the literal fenfe ofthe Prophecy doth belong. For example, the Prophecy of the 53.Chap. of Efai, refpects 7. Chrift immediately and without

the intervention of any type. But the 45th Pfal. There are and the fecond refpect Jefus Chrift, but mediate- Prophecies ly and by the intervention of the type. In the fe- the things cond Pfal. the type is David, to whom belongs ly to the the literal fenfe of the Pfalm. In the 45th Pfal. type, partly the type is Solomon, and 'tis him the literal fenfe fon of the Text refpects. These two forts of Pro- fied by the phecies ought to be handled differently. Thofe type. of the firft rank, i. e. thofe that refer only and immediately to fefus Chrift, must be applied only. and uniformly to Jefus Chrift in all their parts. But thofe of the fecond rank are much harder to be difintricated. For there are fome things that belong only to the perfon that is the type. Others that belong only to the perfon that is reprefented by the type, and laftly, others that belong both to the one and the other. For example, in the 45th Pfal. these words, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; the Scepter of thy Kingdom is a fcep ter of Righteousness, &c. O God, thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above all thy fellows. These words, I fay, cannot without great violence be applied to Solomon. For Solomon is not a God, and it can't be to him that the H. Spirit faith, Thy throne, O God, &c. There are other words in the fame Pfalm, which certainly refpect Solomon as a type, and 7. Chrift as the perfon reprefented by the type. For example, Thou art fairer than any of the children of men: Grace is poured into thy lips, because God hath bleffed thee for ever. Lastly, I am certain, there are other words that agree only to Solomon, and that it is not at all neceffary to refer them to Iefus Chrift. For example, thefe words; Daughters of Kings are among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did ftand the Queen in gold
