Which for the church of God remains,
The end of cares, the end of pains.
4 In holy duties, let the day,
In holy pleasures pass away:

How sweet a sabbath thus to spend
In hope of one that ne'er shall end!

[blocks in formation]

1 ARE we the soldiers of the cross

The followers of the Lamb ?

Then let us fear nor shame nor loss
But glory in his name.

2 Here we must fight if we would reign
Here suffer like our Lord;
And bear each necessary pain
And keep his holy word.

C. M.

3 And Saviour when through grace we rise To where thy glories shine,

We shall in holiness and bliss

16

Reign there with thee and thine.

PSALM XXIV. 7.-cxxxii. 8.

1 ARISE O King of grace, arise,

enter to thy rest;

C. M.

May we through all which tempts or tries,
Be with thy presence blessed.

2 Here by thy Holy Spirit reign,
Here rule us by thy word;

And may thy grace a glorious train
Of joys and hopes afford.

3 Bring sinners to the Saviour's throne;
And as his kingdom grows,

May added glories gem his crown,
And grace convert his foes.

PSALM CXIX. 136. LUKE xix. 41. ROM. ix. 1-3. L. M.

ARISE, our tenderest thoughts arise,

To torrents melt our streaming eyes;

And let us all with anguish feel

The evils which we cannot heal.

2 See human nature sunk in shame,
See scandals poured on Jesus' name
The Father slighted in the Son
His gifts abused, the soul undone.
3 See the short course of vain delight
Closing in everlasting night

In flames that no abatement know,
In tears which must for ever flow
4 O God we feel the mournful scene,
We grieve for sinful dying men;
And fain our pity would reclaim,
And snatch the fireband from the flame.
5 But feeble our compassion proves,
And can but weep where most it loves;
Thine own all-saving arm employ,
And turn our anxious grief to joy.

ISAIAH li. 9. 1 TIMOTHY ii. 1.

L. M.

RM of the Lord awake, awake
Put on thy strength, the nations shake,

And let the world adoring see

Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee.

2 Say to the heathen from thy throne,
"I am Jehovah God alone:"

Thy voice their idols shall confound
And cast their altars to the ground.

3 No more let human blood be spilt,
Vain sacrifice for human guilt;
But to each conscience be applied,
The atonement made when Jesus died.

4 Arm of the Lord thy power extend;
Let Mahomet's imposture end:
Break superstition's papal chain,
And vice and unbelief restrain.

5 Let Zion's time of favor come:

Oh bring the tribes of Israel home!
And let our wondering eyes behold
Gentiles and Jews in Jesus' fold.

6 Almighty God thy grace proclaim
To all of every tribe and name;
Let earth before thee prostrate fall
And crown the Saviour Lord of all.

1AS servants of the living God,

Prayer shall our hearts employ,
And as we tread salvation's road
We lift the voice of joy.

C. M.

2 Have we not reason to rejoice
Whose sins have been forgiven,
Call'd by a gracious father's choice
To be the heirs of heaven?

3 Glory to God most high! we know
Jesus our Lord doth reign;

And grace our freedom doth bestow
From sin's disgraceful chain.

4 Oh, grant us Lord thy love to own,
Unspeakable, divine;

The love which did for sin atone,
The love which made us thine.

5 The spirit of adoption give,
Teach us with every breath
To sing thy mercies while we live ;
And praise thy name in death.

1 AS strangers here below,

With various woes oppressed;

We must through tribulation go
To our eternal rest.

Thus Christ, our glorious head,
Ascended to his throne:

Why should his saints refuse to tread
The way their Lord has gone?

The path to glory lies
Through conflict and distress;

But joyful we at length shall rise,
The kingdom to possess.

'Tis needful that we bear

Our Father's rod of love;

We pass through great affliction here,
To fit for heaven above.

We learn his will divine
Beneath the chastening rod;

It purifies the soul from sin,
And brings us near to God.

PROVERBS Xviii. 24. JOHN xiv. 23.—x. iv.

S the sun's enlivening eye

AS

Shines on every place the same,
So the Lord is always nigh
To the souls that love his name.

2 When they move at duty's call,
He is with them by the way
He is ever with them all,
Those who go, and those who stay.

3 From his holy mercy-seat,
Nothing can their souls confine;
Still in spirit they may meet,
And in sweet communion join.

4 For a season called to part,
Let us then ourselves commend
To the gracious eye and heart
Of our ever present Friend.
