EPHESIANS iii. 15.

546

1

THE

THE saints on earth and those above
But one communion make;

Joined to their Lord in bonds of love,
All of his grace partake.

2 One family we dwell in him,

One church above, beneath;

Though now divided by the stream,
The narrow stream of death.

3 One army of the living God,
To his command we bow ;

Part of the host have crossed the flood,
And part are crossing now.

4 Lo, thousands to their endless home
Are swiftly borne away;

And we are to the margin come,
And soon must go as they.

5 Lord Jesus, be our constant guide;
Then, when the word is given,
Shall death's cold flood its waves divide,
And we shall pass to heaven.

HE saints should never be dismayed
Nor sink in hopeless fear;

For when they least expect his aid,

God will for them appear.

2 When faithful Abraham raised the knife, The angel cried, "Forbear!"

God saw his faith, and saved the life

Of his loved Isaac there.

3 When David seemed Saul's certain prey,
The Philistines at hand,
Hurried the furious king away

To save the invaded land.

4 When Jonah sunk beneath the wave
He thought to rise no more;
But God prepared a fish to save
And bear him to the shore.

5 Blest proofs of God's paternal care
Recorded in his word;

Henceforth may every ill we bear
Be trusted with the Lord.

6 Wait for his seasonable aid,
And though it tarry wait;
The promise may be long delayed,
But cannot come too late.

THE

ISAIAH liii. 1-12.

HE Saviour came, no outward pomp
Declared that he was nigh;

No earthly glories shone in him,
To draw the carnal eye.

2 Fair as a beauteous tender flower,
Amidst the desert grows;

So slighted by a rebel race,
The heavenly Saviour rose.

C. M.

3 Rejected and despised of men,
He was a man of woe,

Grief was his close companion still,
Through all his life below,

4 Yet all the grief he felt was ours,
Ours were the woes he bore;
Pangs not his own, his spotless soul
With bitter anguish tore.

5 They thought he was condemned of heaven, An outcast from his God;

While for our sins he groaned and bled,
Beneath his Father's rod.

6 His sacred blood hath washed our souls
From sin's polluting stain;

His stripes have healed us, and his death
Revived our souls again.

7 He died to bear our guilt away,
That sin might be forgiven;

He lives to bless us and defend,
And plead our cause in heaven.

REVELATION i. 18.

HE Saviour lives, no more to die,

1 THE

L. M.

The Lord of heaven enthroned on high; He lives, triumphant o'er the grave;

His saints, eternally to save.

2 He lives, to banish all our fears,
To bless our faith and dry our tears;

He cheers our faint and troubled hearts,
And all we need to us imparts.

3 He lives, all glory to his name,
In goodness, as in power the same;
He went our mansion to prepare,
And he will bring us safely there.

4 Still will our great, unchanging, Lord;
All grace and peace to us afford,
Till in his presence we adore
And reign with him for evermore.

THE

L. M.

HE Saviour loves our souls so well That he hath ransomed us from hell; And turns us from the downward path Which leads to everlasting wrath.

2 He frees us from guilt's heavy load, And rescues from the curse of God; Once for our sins he did atone,

And soon will raise us to his throne.

3 He made our doubts and terrors cease; He brings us pardon, hope, and peace, And has the Holy Spirit given

To fit us for the bliss of heaven.

4 He keeps us by his loving care,

Feels for our grief and hears our prayer;
He to the end our souls will save,
And make us triumph o'er the grave.

5 That we might happiness receive
He did his heavenly glory leave,

And lived on earth, unknown, obscure,
Amidst the suffering and the poor.

6 He passed through hunger, toil, and pain,
Our hearts to win, our peace to gain;
And left his throne to bleed and die,
That we might live eternally.

7 Why does he thus protect and bless
Those who have lost all righteousness?
Why does he save the hard of heart
And to the wicked grace impart ?
8 Why does he make the proud to bend?
Why love the inconstant to the end?
There's nought in us his heart to move,
But yet he loves us and will love.

9 Love so divine our hearts hath bought,
Let us obey him as we ought;

Serve him through life, with all our power, And give to him each fleeting hour. 10 Let us each day his goodness praise, Walk with delight in all his ways; Ever his faithful servants prove, And love him with eternal love.

HE Saviour, what a quenchless flame
Was burning in his breast,

When onward to Jerusalem
To pain and death he pressed.
