That men may know, that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the Most High over all the earth. o Psal. lxxxvi. 10, 11, 12, 13, 15. For thou art great, and dost wondrous things: thou art God alone. Teach me thy way, O Lord, I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. I willpraise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart and I will glorify thy name for ever more. For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious; long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. : p 2 Thes. iii. 1. Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified even as it is with you. Psal. cxlvii. 19, 20. He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel. He hath not dealt so with any nation and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the Lord. Psal. cxxxviii. 1, 2, 3. I will praise thee with my whole heart, before the gods will I sing praise unto thee. I will worship towards thy holy temple, and praise thy name, for thy loving-kindness, and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. In the day when I cried, thou answeredst me: and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul. 2 Cor. ii. 14, 15. Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish. q Psal. cxlv. throughout. I will extol thee, my God, O King, &c. Psal. viii. throughout. O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! &c. r Psal. ciii. 1. Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Psal. xix. 14. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. s Phil. i. 9, 11. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge, and in all judgment; being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ unto the glory and praise of God. t Psal. Ixvii. 1 to 4. God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us. Selah. That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations. Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah. v Eph. i. 17, 18. That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. w Psal. xcvii. 7. Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods. ness, and whatsoever is dishonourable to him; and by his over-ruling providence, direct and dispose of all things to his own glory.z Q. 191. What do we pray for in the second petition? A. In the second petition, (which is, Thy kingdom come,a) acknowledging ourselves, and all mankind, to be by nature under the dominion of sin and Satan, we pray, that the kingdom of sin and Satan may be destroyed, the gospel z Psal. lxxiv. 18, 22, 23. Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O Lord, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name. Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily. Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually. y 2 Kings xix. 15, 16. And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth, thou hast made heaven and earth. Lord, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, Lord, thine eyes, and see and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God. z 2 Chron. xx. 6, 10, 11, 12. And (Jehoshaphat) said, O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? And now behold, the children of Ammon, and Moab, and mount Seir, whom thou wouldst not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not: Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to east us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do, but our eyes are upon thee. Psal. lxxxiii. throughout. Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, &c. Psal. cxl. 4, 8. Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man, who hath purposed to overthrow my goings. Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; further not his wicked device, lest they exalt themselves.— Selah. 191. a Mat. vi. 10. b Eph. ii. 2, 3. Wherein, in time past, ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past, in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh, and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. c Psal. Ixviii. 1, 18. Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered :— let them also that hate him, flee before him. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell among them. Rev. xii. 10, 11. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. propagated throughout the world,d the Jews called,e the fulness of the Gentiles brought in ;f the church furnished with all gospel-officers and ordinances, purged from corruption, countenanced and maintained by the civil magistrate that the ordinances of Christ may be purely dispensed, and made effectual to the converting of those that are yet in their sins, and the confirming, comforting, and building up of those that are already converted :k that d 2 Thes. iii. 1. Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you. e Rom. x. 1. Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. ƒ John xvii. 9, 20. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word. Rom. xi. 25, 26. For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, (lest ye should be wise in your own conceits,) that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob. Psal. Ixvii. throughout. God be merciful unto us, and bless us: and cause his face to shine upon us, &c. Mat. ix. 38. Pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. 2 Thes. iii. 1. Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified even as it is with you. h Mal. i. 11. For, from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same, my name shall be great among the Gentiles, and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts. Zeph. iii. 9. For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent. : ¿ 1 Tim. ii. 1, 2. I exhort, therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men :For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. : k Acts iv. 29, 30. And now, Lord, behold their threatnings; and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. Eph. vi. 18, 19, 20. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance, and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds, that therein I may speak boldly as I ought to speak. Rom. xv. 29, 30, 32. And I am sure that when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ. Now, I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that yo strive together with me in your prayers to God for me: that I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be re Christ would rule in our hearts here, and hasten the time of his second coming, and our reigning with him for ever m and that he would be pleased so to exercise the kingdom of his power in all the world, as may best conduce to these ends." Q. 192. What do we pray for in the third petition? A. In the third petition, (which is, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven,°) acknowledging that by nature we and all men are not only utterly unable and unwilling to know and do the will of God, but prone to rebel against freshed. 2 Thess. i. 11. Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of his calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power. 2 Thess. ii. 16, 17. Now, our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation, and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work. 1 Eph. iii. 14 to 21. For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man: that Christ may dwell in your, hearts by faith that ye being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory. m Rev. xxii. 20. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come Lord Jesus. n Isa. lxiv. 1, 2. Oh that thou wouldst rend the heavens, that thou wouldst come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence as when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence. And the four beasts had cach of them six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within; and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. For I know, that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not. Job. xxi. 14. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments, for therein do I delight.
