to purge our Consciences from Dead Works, and requiring the exercise of a great many Vertues; an abhorrence and deteftation of our Sins, great and ardent Paffions of Love and Devotion, firm Refolutions of Living to him, who Died for us, Forgiveness of Enemies, and an Univerfal Love and Charity to all Men, espe cially to the Members of the fame Body with us; but in the Church of Rome this admirable Sacrament is turned into a dumb fhew, which no body can be edified with, or into a Sacrifice for the living and the dead, which expiates Sin, and ferves us instead of a Holy Life, as I obferved above.

External Mortifications, and Severities to the Body, Faftings, Watchings, hard Lodging, &c. are very useful Inftruments of Vertue, when they are intended to fubdue the Flesh to the Spirit, and to wean our Minds from Senfual Enjoyments; but when they are intended to satisfie for our Sins, not to kill them; to punish our felves for our fins, that we may commit them more fecurely again, this is not a means to break vicious Habits, and to conquer the love of Sin, but only to conquer the fear of committing it.

This is enough to fhew, how far Popery is from promoting the great defign of the Gofpel to improve and perfect Humane Nature and Holiness, and were there no other Argument against it, this were fufficient to me to prove, That it cannot be the Religion of the Gospel of Christ.
