It is doubtless desirable, that the idol were demolished, and that we might be permitted to offer God a more simple adoration, but the people are not yet ready for the change. It will be sufficient at the present time for our church to be kept within proper bounds. As the laymen become more enlightened, less mischief will be experienced from the priesthood. Let us endeavour to enlighten the clergy themselves, to make them blush for their errors, and to persuade them, by degrees, to become useful citizens
