negligence in not providing your felves with Bread, is the occafion of my giving you this caution about the Leven of the Pharisees and Sadduces? Are you ftill as unacquainted with my way of fpeaking, as when I firft made choice of you? Have you taken no manner of notice of my Miracles and my Doctrine; or are you wholly without memory, that you thus forget what you have heard and feen? When I fed five thousand men with five Loaves, how many Baskets did you fill with the Fragments that remained? They answer'd, twelve: And when four thoufand were fatisfied with feven Loaves, how many Baskets did you then fill? They anfwer'd, feven. Then, continued Jefus, ought you not from hence to have infer'd, that it was very unlikely I fhould be follicitous about your fcarcity of Bread, who thus twice before your eyes, have miraculously increas'd its Substance; and that this was not in my thoughts when I caution'd you against the Leven of the Pharifees and Sadduces? The Apoftles at laft understood that the Leven he mention'd was not to be understood of that which we ufe in making Bread, but of certain Tenets Kk 2

MARK.

CHA P. VIII.

22 And he cometh to Beth. faida, and they bring a blind man unto him, and befoughts him to touch him.

23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had fpit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he faw ought.

24 And he looked up, and faid, I fee men as trees, walking.

25 After that, he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up and. he was reftored, and faw every man clearly.

peculiar to the Pharifees and Sadduces, which like ill Leven gave a pernicious Fer ment to the Life and Converfation.

Jefus afterwards went with his Difciples to Bethfaida, where there was a blind man prefented to him to be cur'd. He refolv'd to gratify their Requeft, but would not perform the Miracle in the Town it felf, either because he thought the Inhabitants unworthy because of their incredulity, or to avoid the Concourfe of People, which began now to be more frequent, and in greater Companies, left the ill defiguing among them might raife fome Tumult against the Romans, under pretence of fetting him up as King of the Fems, which he avoided by often removing from one place to another; for which purpofe the Lake of Gennefareth was very commodious, the Multitude not having Boats enough, nor always in readiness to transport themselves as often as he failed from one fide to the other. For thefe reafons he led the blind man by the hand out of the Town, and having rub'd his Eyes with Spittle, ask'd him whether he faw any thing? The man turning himfelf round, told him he faw a little, but it was fo confuledly, that he could diftinguith Men from Trees only by their motion. Whereupon fefus touch'd his Eyes again, and perfectly reftor'd him to his fight, infomuch that he faw all things plainly and diftinctly. After which he difmift him, charging him not to return to Berfaida, Hor to acquaint any of the Inhabitants with it, for the reafons beforemention'd.

After this Miracle Jefus went a while from the Lake of Gennefareth into the Country about Cefarea, a City founded by Philip the Son of Herod the Great, not far from the fource of Jordan. While they were on their journy, Jefus being retir`d with his Apoftles into a folitary place that he might be unmolefted in his Devotion, ask'd them whom the World took him for, fince he did not differ from others in his outward appearance? They told him, fome thought he was John the Baptift rais'd from the Dead; others thought he was Elias come down from Heaven; and fome took him for Jeremiah reftor'd to life, or fome other of the antient Prophets. Then faid Jefus; But who do you take me for? Peter, not ftaying for the answer of the other Apoftles, replied: Thou art the Meh, the Son of the true and Living God. Upon which Jefus congratulating his knowledg of this Truth, told

CHA P. XVI. Simon Bar-jona : for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18 And I fay also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my church and the gates of hell fhall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever - thou shalt bind on earth, fhall be bound in heaven; and whatfoever thou fhalt loofe on earth, fhall be loofed in heaven.

him, he had great reafon to account himfelf highly favour'd, fince it was impoffible ⚫ any could reveal this important Truth to him but his heavenly Father, who attested it by the Miracles he gave him power to perform. 'Twas not, faid he, without reafon that I gave thee the firname of Peter (which fignifies Stone or Rock) fince thou wilt in thy preaching and conftant adherence to this Truth be like a Rock, firm and unfhaken, on which I will build my Church; nor fhall any Terror of Death make thee difown the Caufe for which they perfecute thee. Great fhall thy Authority be in the Kingdom of Heaven; infomuch that whofe Sins foever thou wilt have punilh'd here on Earth, thall be forthwith punifh'd, and whofe Sins foever thou wilt have pardon'd on Earth, fhall immediatly be forgiven.

Fefus having approv'd this Judgment of Peter concerning him, and rewarded him with thefe fingular Bleffings, charg'd all his Apoftles not to divulge his being the Meth, left fuch a Truth once fpread abroad fhould tempt many of the Jews, not only the bad, but the well meaning alfo, who still expected the Meffiah fhould eftablish an earthly Government among them, to raise fome Tumult on his account, and fo defame his Doctrin as favouring rebellious Principles among thofe that were not fufficiently acquainted with him.

From this time Jefus began openly to declare to them that he muft fhortly go to Ferufalem, and there fuffer all manner of Indignities, and a cruel Death, by the malice of the Sanhedrim, the Priefts, and Teachers of the Law; but that after his being three days dead, he should rife again. And this he plainly foretold them without ufing any figurative Expreffions. Peter hereupon embracing him with fome earneftness, cried out; God forbid, that any fuch thing fhould ever befal you.

Jefus turning about, replied with indignation; Away from me thou who under a pretext of Love and Friendship, thus oppofeft thy felf to my Determinations, and putteft an obstacle in my way to hinder me from executing my Commiffion from God: Your thoughts favour only of worldly Conveniences, and not in the leaft of the Joys of Heaven. Then addreffing himself to the Multitude, he spoke to
