10 Then faid Jefus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go. into Galilee, and there fhall they fee me.

II Now when they were going, behold, fome of the watch came into the city, and fhewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

12 And when they were affembled with the elders,, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the fouldiers,

13 Saying, Say ye, His difciples came by night, and ftole him away, while we flept.

14 And if this come to the governours ears, we will perfuade him, and fecure you.

15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this faying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

I Cor. chap. XV. 5. He was feen of Cephas,

Apostles, whom he honour'd with the gracious Appellation of his Brethren, and tell them that he would go before them into Galilee, and that they fould fee him. Mean while fome of the Soldiers, who had bin plac'd for a guard to the Sepulchre, having feen the Angels, and Fefus's Refurrection, went into the City, and acquainted the chief Priefts with it, who immediatly convening the Sanhedrim advis'd the bribing of the Soldiers; and accordingly a round fum was paid them down, upon condition they fhould give out, that his Difciples had ftolen away his Body while they flept, telling them alfo that if this fhould come to the Governor's Ear, they would fecure them harmless. The Soldiers perform'd their part, having receiv'd the Mony; and this Rumor which was then divulg'd, was believed for many years after. Jefus alfo appear'd to Peter, tho the circumstances are not recorded.

13 And behold, two of them went that fame day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerufalem about threefcore furlongs.

that while they communed

17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are fad ?

18 And the one of them, whofe name was Cleopas, anfwering, faid unto him, Art thou only a ftranger in Jeru falem, and haft not known the things which are come to pafs there in these days?

19 And he faid unto them, What things? And they faid unto him, Concerning Jefus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God, and all the people:

JOHN.

The fame day two of the Difciples went from Jerufalem to Emmaus, a Village about fix or feven Miles off the City, and difcourfing concerning Jefus and his Crucifixion, Jefus himfelf came up to them, and bore them Company; howbeit they knew him not, as not in the least expecting any thing like it. He then ask'd them, what was the Subject of their Difcourfe, and the occafion of their fadness. One of them, nam'd Cleopas, replied, he wondred how a man who feem'd to come from Jerufalem fould be ignorant of what had bin tranfacted there but the laft Friday. Fefus demanded what. Cleopas and his Companion made anfwer, that they meant the Crucifixion of Jefus of Nazareth, a man who certainly was a Prophet, and in great efteem among the People, by reafon of his Doctrin and Miracles,

20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

21 But we trusted that it had been he, which should have redeemed Ifrael: and befides all this, to day is the third day fince these things were done.

22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us aftonished, which were early at the fepulchre :

23 And when they found not his body, they came, faying, that they had also feen a vifion of angels, which faid that he was alfo alive.

24 And certain of them which were with us, went to the fepulchre, and found it even fo as the women had said, but him they faw not.

25 Then he faid unto them, O fools, and flow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

26 Ought not Chrift to have fuffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

whom the Sanhedrim deliver'd up to Pilat as a Malefactor, who commanded him to be crucified by the Roman Soldiers; that as for them they hop'd it had bin he whom God defign'd to be the Deliverer of the Jewish Nation, viz. the Meffiah? nevertheless, that it was now the third day fince his deceafe, fo as they had no hopes left, altho certain Women Difciples of fefs, who had bin early at the Sepulchre that morning, reported they had feen a Vifion of Angels, who affirm'd that Jefus was alive; but fome of the Difciples going thither alfo, found the Sepulchre indeed empty, as the Women had done, but faw neither Jefus, nor the Angels.

Jefus then having upbraided them for their Stupidity and Obfimacy, as not hav ing a clear notion of the Prophecies fo often explain'd to them, nor yet giving a full affent to them, he fhow'd them how by God's appointment, and the Propoffeflion phecies concerning him, the Meffiah was to be put to Death, and after that to take Bbbb

27 And beginning at Mofes, and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the: fcriptures, the things concerning. himself.

28 And they drew nigh unto the village whither they went : and he made as though he would have gone further.

29 But they constrained him, faying, Abide with us, for it is towards evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

30 And it came to pass, as he fat at meat with them, he took bread, and bleffed it, and brake, and gave to them..

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him, and he vanifhed out of their fight.

32 And they faid one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

33 And they rofe up the fame. 13 And, they hour, and returned to Jerufalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

In thefe Difcourfes they pass'd the tune till they were come unto Emmaus, when Jefus pretended he was to go further, that. he might experience their Good will to him. But they urg'd him to stay with them because night was now come on: Being therefore as it were prevail'd on by their intreaties, he went in with them, as if he defign'd to tarry there. While they were at Supper, Jefus took Bread, and having broke it, divided it among them; at which time they took notice of him, and plainly perceiv'd it was their Master, who prefently vanish'd out of their fight. They then confefs'd to one another, they felt a more than ordinary commotion in their minds while he was difcourfing with them, and expounding the more difficult paffages of the Scriptures, which had they reflected on, they might have known that none but Jefus could interpret fo clearly to them. Hereupon they return'd immediatly to Jerufalem; and having met the Apostles with the other Disciples, who were inform'd of his Refurrection, not

But they gave no credit to them notwithstanding there were many both Men and Women that had now feen him. On that fame day, late in the Evening, the Doors being clofe fhut for fear of the fews, and all the Apostles except Thomas difcourfing about thefe affairs, while Cleopas was yet fpeaking, the Doors on a fudden opening as of their own accord, Jefus appeard in the midst of them, and faluted them according to his cuftom, reprehending them for their obftinacy in not believing the many Eyewitneffes of his Re
