Verfions of the Bible; with a large Account of the most valuable Commentaries, Expofitions, and Paraphrafes upon the Whole, or any Part thereof, and the Authors of the fame. As alfo An ample Chronological Table of the History of the Bible, a Jewish Calendar, Tables of all the Hebrew Coins, Weights, and Meafures, reduced to our own. A Differtation upon Jewish Coins and Medals; another upon the Tacticks of the ancient Hebrews, by the Chevalier Folard: concluding with a Literal Tranflation of the Hebrew, Chaldee, Syriac, and Greek Names in the Bible. With Prefaces proper to each Part. In Three Volumes. Written Originally in French, By the Reverend Father Dom AUGUSTIN CALMET, a Benedictine Monk, Abbot of Senones. And now Tranflated into English, from the Author's laft Edition, with Additional Notes, by Samuel D'oyly M. A. late Fellow of Trinity-College in Cambridge, and Vicar of St. Nicholas, Rochefter: And John Colfon M. A, F. R. S. and Vicar of Chalk in Kent.

Father CALMET is known to be defervedly celebrated over all Europe for his univerfal and confummate Learning, of which we have an unquestionable Proof and a noble Specimen in his Comments on the Scriptures of the Old and New Teftament, as well as of his DICTIONARY, concerning which, the following Words are an Advertisement of the Undertakers:

The learned and elaborate Work which is here. offered to the Publick, has generally met with for good a reception among thofe, who understand the Language of the Original, that we thought it might be equally acceptable to our English Readers, if it were once made intelligible to them: This therefore

therefore has been undertaken by the twọ Gentlemen, who are named as the Tranflators in the Title-page, and who hope that their endeavours in accomplishing this Undertaking will contribute to the fatisfaction and advantage of all fuch as are Lovers of Scripture, and delight in Theological Studies. It has been their conftant care to exprefs the genuine fenfe of the Author with all the exactnefs poffible; and when there was a neceffity of diffenting from his pinions, as particularly in fuch points as concern the Doctrines of the Church of Rome, fuch Additions and Alterations are inferted by way of Note at the bottom of the page: As likewife when any Miftakes could be corrected, or Improvements made, whether in his Chronology, Geography, Accounts of Weights and Meafures, &c. For which purpose they have carefully perufed feveral of the most approved modern Writers, particularly fuch as our Author had no opportunity to confult when he compiled his Dictionary. And not only the Tranflators of this Work, but the Undertakers alfo, have contributed their utmost, that this English Edition may be as compleat as poffible in all its parts; for they have taken care, at no fmall expence, to have the numerous and beautiful Prints of the Original copy'd by the beft hands that could be procured; as alfo that the Work itself may be neatly and correctly printed.

The two Volumes which were first put out, without any intimation by the Author, that he had not finished his Defign, were tranflated and made ready for the Prefs, and had been printed long ago, had not the Undertakers been prevented by the publication of two Supplemental Volumes; which obliged them to take other

measures

measures, and confider how to perfect the Author's Scheme, by inferting the new Additions in their proper places, and thereby compofing one uniform Body of the whole Dictionary, under one and the fame Alphabet. This could not be accomplished without time; and no fooner was this performed, and the Work again made ready for the Prefs, but new delays were occafioned by the Author's more correct edition of Paris, improved and newmodel'd by himself. By this impreffion we thought it neceffary to revise our whole Tranflation, that the English Reader might have it as perfect as poffible. This, we hope, will be Apology fufficient to thofe, who might have expected an earlier appearance of this Work, from the publick notice that had been given in former Propofals and Advertisements.

As to the Conditions for this Work, the fame Undertakers inform us; that it will be printed in Three Volumes in Folio, on the fame Paper, and with the fame Letter as the Specimen annexed; and upon the nearest Computation will make above Six Hundred and Twenty Sheets in Print, befides One Hundred and Sixty Curious Copper-Plates, fixty-five whereof are Whole-Sheet Plates, and Eighty-nine HalfSheets, including Six large Maps.

The Price to Subfcribers will be Six Guineas in Sheets, Two Guineas to be paid down, and the Remainder on Delivery; which will be about Lady-Day next.
