EPIPHANY.-The manifestation or appearance of our blessed SAVIOUR to the Gentiles; the word Epiphany signifies manifestation or shewing forth. SEPTUAGESIMA, or the third Sunday before Lent. SEXAGESIMA, or the second Sunday before Lent. QUINQUAGESIMA, or the next Sunday before Lent ASH-WEDNESDAY.-The first day of Lent: so called, because sinners used to lament their sins, lying in sackcloth and ashes at this season.

LENT. That season of fasting or abstinence during which our SAVIOUR was withdrawn into a desert, where he fasted forty days and nights, and overcame the most severe temptations of Satan; thus vanquishing the grand enemy of GOD and Man, and procuring for his believing people, victory over the powers of darkness. The last week of Lent is called Passion Week, in which we call to our remembrance CHRIST's last sufferings and death.

PALM-SUNDAY.-The Sunday before Easter: so called in remembrance of our SAVIOUR'S coming in triumph from Bethany to Jerusalem, when the multitude that attended him cut down branches of palm trees, crying "Hosanna to the Son of David."

MAUNDAY THURSDAY.-The Thursday before Easter; so called from the mandate or command which our SAVIOUR gave his Apostles to commemorate his supper, which after the celebration of the Passover he instituted on this day.

EASTER DAY.-The day on which our blessed SAVIOUR rose from the dead, being the third day after His crucifixion; thus triumphing over death, and showing, that the debt of suffering, for the guilt of man which he took upon Him, was discharged, and that He was become to all his believing people," the Resurrection and the Life."

GOOD FRIDAY.-The day on which JESUS CHRIST suffered on the cross, and bore the punishment of our sins.

ASCENSION DAY, OR HOLY THURSDAY. The day on which CHRIST ascended into heaven, which was forty days after his Resurrection.

WHIT-SUNDAY.

-The day on which the Holy Ghost came down upon the Apostles: it was also the season of baptizing in the ancient Church when white garments were used.

TRINITY SUNDAY.-The day set apart to glorify

the three

persons in the blessed Godhead, the

FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST; our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier.

EMBER DAYS.-Certain days set apart by the Church, to implore by prayer and fasting, the blessing of GOD upon all those who are to be ordained Ministers; they are called Ember Days, because the ancient Christians used on their solemn feasts to sprinkle ashes on their heads.

ROGATION DAYS.-The Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, before our Lord's Ascension: called Rogation days, from the extraordinary prayers and supplications which were offered at this season by devout Christianss, to entreat ALMIGHTY GOD to turn away from our Nation those judgments our sins had deserved; and to bless the fruits with which the earth is then covered.
