be sent auto you to correct and amend in you whatfcever doth offend the eyes of your heavenly Father; know you certainly, that if you truly repent you of your fins and bear your fickness patiently, truiting in God's mer cy, for his dear Son Jefus Christ's fake, and render unto him humble thacks for his fatherly vifitation, fubmitting your elf wholly unto his will; it fhall turn to your profit, and help you forward in the right way that leadeth unto everlasting life..

If the Perfon vifited be very fick, then the Curate may end bis Exhortation in this place, or else proceed. { TAKE therefore in good part the chafifement of the Lord: For (as St. Paul faith in the twitch Chapter to the Hebrews) whem the Lord loveth he chateneth, and scourgeth, every fon whom he receivethe If ye endure chaftening, God dealeth with you as with fons; for what fon is he whom the fathe chafteneth not? But if ye be without chaft fement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye baftards, and not ions. Further more, we have had fathers of our fle fh, which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: fhall we not much rather be in fubjection unto the Father of Spirits, and live ? For they ver:ly for a few days chattened us after their own pleasure ; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holinefs. Thefe words, good bre ther, are written in holy Scripture for our comfort and inftruction, that we should patiently, and with thankf giving, bear our heavenly Fathers correction, whenfoever by any manner of adversity it thalt pleate his grá cious goodness to vifit us. And there fhould be no greater comfort to Chriftian pertons, than to be made like unto Chrift, by fuffering patiently adverfities, troubles, and fickneffes. For he himieli went not up to joy, but firft te fuffered pain; he entered nct his glory before he was crucified. So truly our way to eternal joy is to fuffer here with Chrift; and our door to enter into eternal life is gladly to die with Chrift: that we may rife again from death, and dwell with him in everlasting life. Now therefore taking your fickness, which is thus profitable for you, patiently, I exhort you in the Name of God to remember the profeffion which you made unto God in your Baptifm. And forafmuch as after this life there is an account to be given unto the righteous Judge, by whom all must be judged without refpect of perfons; I require you to examine yourself and your cftate, both toward God and man; to that accufing and condemning yourself for your own faults, you may find mercy at our heavenly Fathers hand for Chrifl's fake, and not be accufed and condemned in that tearful judgment. Therefore I fhall rehearse to you the Articles of our Faith, that you may know whether you do believe as a Chriftian man should, or no.

Here the Minifter fhall rehearse the Articles of the Faith, faying thus,

OST thou believe in God the Father Aimighty, Maker of Heaven and earth?

And in Jefus Chrift his only begotten Son our Lord? And that he was conceived by the Holy Ghoft; born of the Virgin Mary; that he fuffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified dead, and buried; that he went down into Hell, and allo did rife again the third days that he afcended into Heaven, and fitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; and from thence hall come again at the end of the world, to judge the quick and the dead?

And doft thou believe in the Holy Ghoft; the holy Catholick Church; the Communion of faints; the Remiffion of fins; the Refurrection of the tiefh; and everlasting life after death?

- All this I ftedfastly believe.

The fick Perfon fhall answer,

Then fhall the Minister examine whether he repent him truly of his fins, and be in charity with all the world: exbonting him to forgive, from the bottom of his heart, all perfons that have offended him; and if he bath offended any other to ask them forgiveness; and where he hath doneinjury or wrong to any man, that he make amends to the utmost of his power. And if he bath not before dypojed of his goods, let him then be admonished to make bis Will, and to declare his Debts, what he oweth, and what is owing unto him, for the better discharging of his Con fcience, and the quietness of his Executors. But men should often be put in remembrance to take order for the jet• tling of their temporal eftates whilft they are in health.

These words before rehearsed, may be Jaid before the Minifter begin bis Prayer, as he shall fee caufe The Minifter should not omit earnestly to move fuch fick perfons as are of ability to be liberal to the poor to and ag Here fhall the fick perfon be movea to make a special Confession of his fins, if he feel pis Confcience troubled with any weighty matter. After which Confeffion, the priest fail abfolve sim (if he humbly and beartily agfire it) after this fort:

Amen. And then the Prieft fhall Jay the following Colle,

Let us pray...

MOST merciful God, who according to the multitude of thy mercies, doft fo put away the fins of thofe who truly repent, that thou remembereft them no more; Open thine eye of mercy upon this thy fetvant, who moft earnestly defireth pardon and forgiveness. Renew in him, moft loving Father, whatsoever hath been decayed by the fraud and malice of the devil, or by his own carnal will and frailnefs; preferve and continue this fick member in the unity of the Church; confider his contrition, accept his tears, afwage his pain, as

Amen. Then the Minifter shall say the 7ft Pfalm. Adding this g

Then feall the Prieft fay,

Prayer for a fick Child.

Almighty God, and merciful Father to whom alone belong the iffaes of life and death: look down from Heaven, we beseech thee, with the eyes of mercy upon this Child now lying upon the bed of fickness: vifit him, O Lord, with thy falvation, deliver him in thy good appointed time from his bodily pain, and fave his foul for thy mercies fake. Yet, forafmuch as in all appearance the time of his diffolution draweth near, fo fit and prepare him we beseech thee, against the hour of death, that after his departure hence in peace, and in thy favour, his foul may be received into thine everlasting kingdom, through the merits and mediation of Jefus Chrift thine only Son, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

A commendatory Prayer for a fick person at the point of departure.

Almighty God, with whom do live the fpirits of juft men made perfect, after they are delivered from their earthly prifons; we humbly commend the foul of this, thy fervant, our dear brother, into thy hands, as into the hands of a faithful Creator, and moft merciful Saviour; moft humbly befeeching thee, that it may be precious in thy fight. Wash it, we pray thee, in the blood of that immaculate Lamb, that was flain to take away the fins of the world; that whatfoever defilements it may have contracted in the midst of this miferable and naughty world, through the lufts of the flesh, or the wiles of Satan, being purged and done, a it be prefented pure and without fpot before thee. And teach us who furvive, in this and other likeway, may daily fpectacles of mortality, to fee how frail and uncertain our own condition is, and fo to number our days, that we may ferioufly apply our hearts to that holy and heavenly wifdom, whilft we live here, which may in the end bring us to live everlafting, through the merits of Jefus Chritt, thine only fan our Lord. Blelled Lord, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comforts, we beseech thee look down in pity and compaffion upon this thy afflicted fervant. Thou writest bitter things against him, and makeft him to poflefs his former iniquities; thy wrath lieth hard upon him, and his foul is full of trouble: But, O merciful God, who haft written thy holy Word for our learning, that we, through patience and comfort of thy, holy Scriptures might have hope; give him a right understanding of himself, and of thy threats and promifes, that he may neither caft away his confidence in thee, nor place it any where but in thee. Give him ftrength against all his temptations, and heal all his diftempers. Break not the bruited reed, nor quench the fmoaking Bax. Shut not up thy tender mercies in difpleature; but make him to hear of joy and gladness, that the --bones' which thou haft broken may rejoice. Then fall follore the Lefon, 1 Cor. 15. 20.

OW is Chrift rifen from the dead, and become the firft-fruits of them that flpt. For fince by man came death, by man came alfo the refurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even fo in Chri fhall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Chrift the first fruits; afterward they that are Chrifts, at his coming. Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the father; when he fhall have put down all rule, and all authority and power. For he must reign till he bath put all enemies under his feet. The laft enemy that fhall be destroyed is death: For he hath put all thing, under his feet. But when he faith all things are put under him, it is manifeft that he is excepted which did parall things under him. And when all things fhall be fubdued unto him, then hall the fon alfo himfelf be fubject unto him, that put all things under him, that God may be all in all. Eife what fhall they do which are baptized for the dead, the dead rife not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead? And why ftand we in jeopardy every hour? I' proteft by your rejoicing which I have in Chrift Jefus our Lord, I die daily. If after the manner of men I have fought with beafts at F.phefus, what advantageth it me it the dead rise not? Let us eat and drink, for to mor row we die. Be not deceived; evil communications corrupt good manners Awake to righteoufnefs, and in uot; for fome have not the knowledge of God: I fpeak this to your fhame. But fome man will say, How are the dead raised up and with what body do they come? Thou fool, that which thou fowelt is not quickened except it die. And that which thou fowell, thou foweit not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of fome other grain. But God giveth it a body, as it hath pleafed him, and to every feed his own body. All flesh is not the fame flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another another of fishes, and another of birds. There are alfo celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial; but the glory of ourth of beats, the celeftial is one, and the glory of the ter eftrial is another. There is one glory of the fun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the itars; for one ftar differeth from another far in glory. So alfo is the refurr &tion of the dead: It is fown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption; It is fown in difhonour; it is raised in glory; it is fown in weakness; it is raifed in power: It is fown a natural body; it is raised a fpiri. tual body. There is a natu al body, and there is a fpiritual body. And fo it is written, The firft man

People ought to be careful that the defign of this Office be not mistaken. For tho' it is very commendable for a fick Perfon thus publickly to profefs his Faith in Chrift, and his Communion with the Church yet it ought by no means to be looked upon as a Popish Viaticum; o as that it may be

This Office feems to be very properly adapted to the ferious occafion for which it is defigned. 'Tis highly folemn and affecting, fublime and comfortable. For whilft it raifes

:

Adam was made a living foul, the faft Adam was made a quickening fpirit. Howbeit, that was not fi:ft which is fpiritual; but that which is natural, and afterward that which is fpiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy the fecond man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, fuch are they that are earthy and as is the heavenly, fuch are they alfo that are heavenly. And as we have born the image of the earthy, we shall alfo bear the image of the heavenly. Now this I fay, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God neither doth corruptfon inherit incorruption. Behold, I fhew you a mystery: We fhall not all fleep, but we fhall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the laft trump; (for the trumpet shall found and the dead thall be raise incorruptible and we shall be changed) For this corruptible muft put on incorruption, and this mortal mult put on immortality. So when this corruptible fhall have put on incorrup tion, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, thea fhall be brought to pass the fay ng that is written, Death is Iwallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy fting? O grave, where is thy victory? The fting of death is fin, and the ftrength of fin is the law. But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory, through our Lord Jefus Chrift. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye fted faft, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forafmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the the Lord. When they come to the Grave, while the corps is made ready to be laid into the earth the Priest shall say, or the Prieft and Clerks fhall fing,
