what no one elfe docs. I know he will come if he is fent to, and I fhould like him to be with you, and to fleep in his own bed as ufual." I incline your earnestly hope that the Lord may heart to comply with this laft requeft of our dear departed friend. Mr. Hudson preached on Sunday; but, as he knew little of my relation, he could fay little of him. The continuance of your friendship and affection, and the favour of being interested in your prayers, would, I think, greatly alleviate my prefent diftrefs; but should I ever experience the reverfe of this, I think I never should be able to lift up my head. My dear friend, Mifs Diggins, who is exceedingly kind and tender to me, unites with me in moft affectionate love to yourself, dear Lady Sanderfon, and Miss S. Now, my dear and highlyvalued and valuable friend, will you excufe every unbecoming liberty I have taken in addreffing you, and believe me to be with the highest esteem and regard,

Your much obliged and affectionate,

OUTLINES

OF A

FUNERAL SERMON,

OCCASIONED BY THE DEATH OF THE

REV. J. JENKINS,

Preached at LEWES, in SUSSEX, on SUNDAY, the 23d of SEPTEMBER, 1810,

BY WILLIAM HUNTINGTON, S.S.

[merged small][ocr errors]

For the Lord himself fhall defcend from heaven with a fhout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Chrift fhall rife first. 1 Thef. iv. 16.

Ir appears that our great apoftle had been in

formed of the death of fome member or members of the church of God at Theffalonica, which had occafioned great grief and forrow to fome of the furviving ones. To comfort these he reminded them of the refurrection of Chrift, and of our refurrection by him: I would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are afleep, (faith he) that ye forrow not, even as others which have no hope. To familiarize death to the faint, the Scriptures often fpeak of

death as a fleep; and indeed it is no more to a child of God. Because the blood of Chrift

cleansing the believer, the fting of death, which is fin, is removed; and, by the imputation of Chrift's righteousness, the curfe of the law is removed alfo, and thefe fpoil death of all its terrors. Befides, the faints are to be made perfect in knowledge, and therefore will know each other in heaven, as appears by Adam's knowing Eve upon the first fight of her; and the three apofiles on the mount knew Mofes and Elias, and called them by their names. We shall not only know each other, but enjoy each other's company, be united in the fame bond, and join in the fame fong, for ever and ever; and therefore fuch fhould not forrow as others who have no fuch hope. For, although hopeless fouls may know each other in the world to come, even those whofe expectation is wrath, Prov. xi. 23. yet fuch expect no enjoyment, either of friends or relations in hell, witnefs the rich man in the parable, who so much dreaded the company of his five brethren in that place of torment where he was. The dearest companions in fin, will be the most hateful companions in hell. The heathens, especially in the east, used to run into the wildest exceffes of grief and forrow at the de. parture of friends by death, being ignorant of Chrift, and of the fweet doctrine of the refurrecSo that their forrow was defperate forrow,
