Section II.-Experimental Piety Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven The Saviour and Little Children PIETY is that state of the heart and mind by which we cheerfully regard the duties we owe to God, and to our fellow crea B tures. It is very clear therefore, that in order to piety, we must have a knowledge of the various duties which are required from us. Unless we know, we cannot obey; and therefore, God has caused holy men to write a book; and in that book he has told us his will as it regards all our thoughts, and words, and actions. That book is the Bible, the only book which has God for its Author, and which is able to make us wise to salvation. The men whose names are to the various parts of that book, received from God the truths they wrote down, and since then, learned and good men have translated them from the Hebrew and Greek, into our language; so that now, we have in our native tongue, the precious word of God. Now, whatever we wish to know about God, and what he requires from us, or concerning our fellow creatures, and how we must act towards them, the Bible clearly and fully makes known. And though some parts of the Bible are not easily understood, yet all that relates to |
