may make it his chief endeavour to act in fuch a manner as may tend to the honour and glory of his Almighty Maker: and that we and his fubjects in general, feriously reflecting that thou the Sovereign of the univerfe haft conferred upon him the authority which he enjoys, may through a religious principle, and not merely for wraths fake, or being afraid of the power, (Rom. xiii. 3.) pay him all due fervice and respect, and yield a ready obedience to all his commands, when they fhall be in the Lord, (Eph. vi. 1.) and not inconfiftent with any fuperior duty; and that we may do this for thy fake, who in thy holy word hait inftructed us, (Rom. xii. 2. 1 Pet. xi. 13.) to this duty and this we beg for the fake of Jefus Christ our Lord, who eternally reigneft in the glory of the ever blefied Trinity. Amen.

Paraphrafe on the Creed.

I am firmly perfuaded that there is one, and but one God, though difringuifhed by three perfons; whereof one is the Almighty Father, the Creator of the univerfe, and of all thofe that dwell in it; not only of the grofs bodies which are the objects of our fight, but of invisible angels and fpirits.

And in one Lord Jefus Chrift, The only begotten Son of God, Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one fubftance with the Father, by whom all things were mace: Who for us men and for our falvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghoft of the Virgin Mary, And was made man, And was crucified alfo for us under Pontius Pilate. He fuffered and was buried, And the third day he rofe again according to the Scriptures, And afcended into heaven, And fitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he fhall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: Whofe kingdom

And I believe in the Holy Ghoft, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Whọ

PARAPHRASE,

I alfo ftedfaflly believe in the fecond perfon of the trinity, who is not the adopted, but the true natural and only begotten Son of God, who was begotten by his eternal Father, before all time, God the Son of God, as truly and properly as one man is the fon of another, though after a fpiri tual manner, and purely propagated as one light is generated of another, without diminution of fublance, produced from the eternal effence, and not made as creatures are; being of an effence fimilar to that of the eternal Father, who created the world; who, to ransom the fouls of men which were forfeited, and became eternal objects of the divine vengeance, forfock his throne of glory in heaven, and came to take upon him our nature here on earth, and by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghof, was born of the body of Mary, an unfpotted virgin, and became a true man, and fubmitted to the death of the crofs, under the prefideftfhip of Pontius Pilate, at that time imperial procurator of Judea. He remained in the grave during part of three days, and on the third day arofe From the dead, according to the prophecies delivered in fcripture and after that, in the prefence of many witneffes every way worthy of credit, afcended up into heaven, where he now holds the most exalted station of that glorious place, and intercedes for us with his Almighty Father; he fhall come again, accompanied by millions of faints and angels, to judge thofe who fhall at that time dwell upon earth, and those who are already dead. I no lefs firmly believe in the third perfon of the trinity, God the Holy Ghoft, the fource and conveyer of grace and fpiritual life to us, who is not, like the Son, generated of the Father, but, according to the fcripture phrafe, proceedeth both from the Father and the Son, whom in our praifes and prayers and all our acts of devotion, we honour jointly with the Father and the Son; by whole inipiration the holy fçriptures were deliver

with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who fpake by the prophets. And I believe one Catholick and Apoftolick Church. I acknowledge one Baptifm for the remiffion of fins, And I look for the refurrection of the dead, And the life of the world to come, Amen.

Then the Curate fall declare unto the People what Holy days, or Fafting-days, are in the week following to be obferved. And then aljo (if occafion bey hall notice be given of the Communion; and the Banns of Matrimony publibed; and Briefs, Citations, and Excommunications read. And nothing fhall be proclaimed or published in the Church, during the time of Divine Service, but by the Minifter: Nor by him any thing, but what is prescribed in the Rules of this Book, or enjoined by the King, or by the Ordinary of the Place.

Then fhall follow the Sermon, or one of the Homilies already fet forth, or hereafter to be fet forth by Authority.

Then fall the Prieft return to the Lords Table, and begin the Offertory, Saying one or more of thefe Sentences following, as he thinketh most convenient in his difcretion,

td. I believe there is one catholic or univerfal church, and but one alone; which is built upon the foundation laid by the Apostles, and maintains the doctrine by the preached. I acknowledge a baptifm inftituted by Chrift, the remiffion of fins, to be administered in one form of words, and not to be repeated 1 expect that all the dead fhall arife, and that good men fhall then be admitted to an everlasting state of glory. Amen.

1. Let the light of you chriftians fhine forth in fuch fplendour in the eyes of all who behold you, by difplaying to them an extraordinary example of holiness, charity, and all praife-worthy actions, that they may be fo fully convinced of the goodness of your religion, as to be forced to afcribe its original unto God, and to glorify him by their converfion to the faith.

2. You must not hoard up for yourfelves, as worldly-minded men earthly treafures, fuch as money and magnificent habits, one of which i cankered by the ruft, the other eaten up by moths, and both of them fubjeft to be stolen by thieves; but lay up for yourfalves heavenly treafures,

4. Not every one that faith unto me, Lord, Lord, fhall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doth the will of my Father which is in heaven. St Matth. 7. 21.

5. Zaccheus ftood forth, and faid unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have done any wrong to any man, I reftore four-fold. St Luke 19. 8.

3. Let all your proceedings in your intercourfe with other men difcover is much justice and charity, as we could reafonably with they would fhew us; and this is the fur of the whole first table in the Mofaic law, and of what is delivered concerning focial duties in all the writings of the prophets.

4. Men fhall not be made partakers of eternal glory, only for the beHeving in Chrift, and calling upon him Lord, Lord, in the language of his difciples; but unless they moreover discharge the duties enjoined them by God, and yield a fincere obedience to his laws, they fhall never eater into that happy ftate.

5. Zaccheus having received full conviction of the excellence of Chrift's doctrine, by the report he had of it the first time he faw his Perfon, in in this manner declared his firm refolution of obeying his laws; Lord, though other people imagine that they have fufficiently complied with the rule of charity, by fetting apart one fifth of their income for alms, behold I am ready to give one half of what I am poffeffed of to the poor and if I have wronged any one, I do not fty to be convicted before a judge, and to be compelled to make a fourfold reftitution according to the Mofaic law; I make a voluntary offer of it.

6. What foldier goes out to fight who has not his pay appointed him by thofe in whofe caufe he expofes his life? What labourer works and toils in a vineyard, and is not allowed to pluck a few of the grapes? What thepherd looks after a flock or herd of cattle, and is not allowed to much as to taste of the milk which they yield?

7. If we have fown unto you fpiritual things, is it a great matter if we shall reap your worldly things? 1 Cor. 9. 11.

8. Do ye not know that they who minifter about holy things, live of the facrifice? and they who wait at the altar, are partakers with the altar? Even fo hath the Lord alfo ordained, that they who preach the Gofpel, fhould live of the Gospel. 1 Cor. 9. 13, 14.

9. He that foweth little, fhall reap little and he that foweth plenteoufly, fhall reap plenteously. Let every man do according as he is difpofed in his heart, not grudgingly, or of neceffity; for God loveth a cheerful giver. 2 Cor. 9. 6, 7.

PARAPHRASE.

7. If we, in difcharging the minifterial function, have fown among you the fpiritual treasures of the gospel, is it any great matter, if, in reward of our trouble, we reap from you fuch a portion of worldly things, as will juft ferve to procure us food and raiment, and the other neceffaries of life?

8. Do not they who, under the judaical law minifter in the killing and offering the facrifices, gain a livelihood thereby? do not they who for that purpofe attend at the altar, retain a portion of the facrifices for their own ufe? as we read (Deut. xviii. 1.) in like manner our bleffed Lord has ordained, that thofe who are the preachers of his gospel, should there by acquire a comfortable livelihood.

9. If the fower is fparing, he will have but a small crop; fo thofe who are fparing in acts of charity fhall meer with a fmaller reward: however, in your contributions, give as you had before defigned to do; not being prevailed upon by example to give more than you can fpare, and then grudging it when it is done; for God confders the chearfulness as one of the most effential parts of charity.

10. Let the perfon who reaps the benefit of the preaching of the gofpel" chearfully contribute to the fupport of him that teacheth; let no perfon deceive himself with idle excufes, faying, I have little enough for my own afe, why fhould I labour to maintain others; remember, that tho' thefe excufes may pass with men, God is not to be mocked, but that he will be feady in his determination with regard to charity, that as a man foweth, even fo fhall he reap.
