the wedding; and they would not come. Again. he sent forth other servants, saying; 'Tell them which are bidden; Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready; come unto the marriage.' But they made light of it, and went their ways; one to his farm, another to his merchandise. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth; and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then saith he to his servants; The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.'

So those

servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all, as many as they found, both bad and good; and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment; and he saith unto him; Friend, how camest thou in hither, not having a wedding garment?" And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants; Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.'"

Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples

with the Herodians, saying; "Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man; for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us, therefore, what thinkest thou? is it lawful to give tribute unto Cesar, or not?" But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said; "Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money."

And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them; "Whose is this image and superscription ?"

They say unto him; "Cæsar's."

Then said he unto them; "Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which are Cæsar's; and unto God the things that are God's."

18-27.

When they had heard these words, they marvelled; and left him, and went their way. Then come unto him the Sadducees, which M.x. say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying; "Master, Moses wrote unto us, 'If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed un

to his brother.' Now there were seven brethren; and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her and died, neither left he any seed; and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed. Last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife."

xxii.33.

And Jesus answering, said unto them; " Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels which are in heaven. And as touching the dead, that they rise, have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying; I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?' He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. Ye therefore do greatly err."

Matt. And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine. Mk.xii. And one of the Scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked "Which is the first commandment of

all ?"

And Jesus answered him ; "The first of all the commandments is; Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.' This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this; Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.' There is none other commandment greater than these.'”

And the scribe said unto him 66 ; Well, Master, thou hast said the truth, for there is one God, and there is none other but he ; and

to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him; "Thou art not far from the kingdom of God."

And no man after that durst ask him any question.

CHAPTER XXIX.

Jesus questions the Pharisees

Jesus condemns the Scribes and Pharisees, and foretells the Destruction of the Temple.

xxii. 41

WHILE the Pharisees were gathered togeth- Matt er, Jesus asked them, saying; "What think —46. ye of Christ? whose son is he?"

They say unto him; "The son of David." He saith unto them; "How then doth David in spirit call him Lord? saying; 'The LORD saith unto my Lord; Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.' If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?"

And no man was able to answer him a word; neither durst any man, from that day forth, ask him any more questions.

And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury. And many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and said unto them; "Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury. For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living."

Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to 39. his disciples, saying; "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. All, therefore, whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men. They make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments; and love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets, and to be called of men Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth; for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
