temple, and breaking bread from house to houfe, did
eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people.
And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved (i).
temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth 2 hour (a): And a certain man lame from his mother's
womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate
of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms 3
of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing
Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked 4 an alıns. And Peter fastening his eyes upon him, 5 with John, faid, Look on us. And he
gave to them, expecting to receive something of them : 6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but
such as I have give I thee: In the nanie of Jesus 7 Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk (b). And he
took him by the right hand, and lifted him up; and immediately his feet and ancle bones received strength.
(i) These were the chosen remnant, who were saved or preserved from the judgments impending over the Jewish nation. The words may also signify such as were in the way of eternal falvation ; and then it is obvious to remark, that the church of Rome is so far from being (as the pretends) the mother and mistress of all churches, that there was not at this time any church at all at Rome: and fó far is salvation from being confined within the Roman pale, that there was daily an addition of such as should be saved at Jerusalem. When therefore we profess our belief in the holy catholic church, we mean the whole body of the church in every part of the world, as united in one communion and fellowship under Christ our only head.
(a) The ninth hour was three o'clock, being the time of evening prayer.
(6) In the name, means, by the authority and power, of Jesus Christ,

and they were filled with wonder and amazement. II at that which had happened unto him. And as
the lame man which was healed, held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering..
And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, ye men of Ifrael, why marvel ye at this ? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our
own power or holiness we had made this man to 13 walk? The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of
Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son
presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let 14. him go. But ye denied the holy One, and the Just, 15 and desired a murderer to be granted unto you: And“
killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from 16 the dead; whereof we are witnesses. And his name,
through faith in his name (c), hath made this man strong, whom ye fee and know : yea, the faith which
is by him, hath given him this perfect foundness in 17 the presence of you all. And now, brethren, I wot
that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your 18 rulers. But those things which God before had
shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ
should suffer, he hath fo fulfilled (d). 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your fins
may be-blotted out, when the times of refreih
(c) Through the lame man's faith in the power given by Christ to the apostles to heal him.
(d) But the wise providence of God made nfe of your errors and passions, to accomplish the redemprion men by the deach of Christ, as the prophets had all along foretold.
20 ing shall come from the presence of the Lord, And
he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preach21 ed unto you: Whom the heaven must receive, un
til the times of reftitution of all things, which God
hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets, 22 since the world began. For Mofes truly said unto
the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you, of your brethren, like unto me(e);
him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he ihall 23 say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every
soul which will not hear that prophet, shall be de24 stroyed from among the people. Yea, and all the
prophets from Samuel, and those that follow after,
as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of 25 these days. Ye are the children of the prophets (6)
and of the covenant which God made with our fa.
thers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy feed fhall 26 all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto
you first, God having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
AND as they spake unto the people, the priefts, and
the captain of the temple (a), and the Sadducees, 2 came upon them, Being grieved that they taught
the people, and preached through Jesus the resur
(e) Oar blessed Saviour was the prophet raised up like as Mofes was ; being, like him, of the Jewish nation, and having received the fullest and freest communications of the divine will, and the power of working miracles, for the conviction of men. Deut. xviii. 15.
(f) Ye are descended from the same stock as the prophets, and of consequence ye are heirs of the covenant.
(a) The captain of the temple was the officer commanding the guard, or watch, that was kept there by the Levites.

put them in hold unto the next day; for it 4 was now even-tide. Howbeit, many of them which
heard the word, believed; and the number of the 5 men was about five thousand. And it came to pass
on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and 6 fcribes, And Annas the high-priest, and Caiaphas,
and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of
the kindred of the high-priest, were gathered toge-7 ther at Jerusalem. And when they had set them in
the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what 8 name, have ye done this? Then Peter filled with
the holy Ghost, faid unto them, Ye rulers of the 9 people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be ex
amined of the good deed done to the impotent man, 10 by what means he is made whole ; Be it known un
to you all, and to all the people of Ifrael, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucifi
ed, whom God raised from the dead, even by him, 11 doth this man stand here before you whole. This is
the stone which was set at nought of you builders, 12 which is become the head of the corner. Neither is
there salvation in any other (c): for there is none other name under heaven given among men, where
by we must be saved. 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and
John, and perceived that they were unlearned and
ignorant men (1), they marvelled; and they took 14 knowledge of them, that they had been with Jelus.
(6) The Sadducees denied a resurrection and life to come, and were therefore provoked that that doctrine was publicly taught.
(c) It appears from this passage that invocation of the Virgin Mary, or any other Saint, for either eternal falvation, or relief from bodily disease, is not only useless, but sinful.
(d) Thát they were unlearned and ignorant men, was a proof, that their unshaken courage, the strength of their reasoning, and the miracles they performed, could not be owing to any thing but the real power of God himself.
And beholding the man which was healed standing with 15 then, they could say nothing against it. But when
they had coinmanded them to go alide out of the 16 council, they conferred among themselves, Saying,
What ihall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifeft
to all them that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot 17 deny it. But that it spread no further among the
people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak 18 henceiorth to no man in this name. And they called
them, and commanded them not to speak at all, nor 19 teach, in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John an
fwered and said unto them, Whether it be right in
the fight of God, to hearken unto you more than un20 to God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the 21 things which we have seen and heard. So when they
had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of
the people: for all men glorified God for that which 22 was done. For the man was above forty years old, 23 on whom this miracle of healing was thewed. And being let
go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said 24 unto them. And when they heard that, they lift up
their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord,
thou art God which haft made heaven and earth, 25 and the sea, and all that in them is : Who by the
mouth of thy servant David haft said, Why did the
heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things ? 26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were
gathered together against the Lord, and against his 27
Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius
Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel 28 were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy
hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. 29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings : and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may
