PREFACE.

IN presenting the Buffalo City Directory for 1862, the compiler feels it incumbent to say a few words in relation thereto. Although the first to commence the regular annual publication of a City Directory in Buffalo, circumstances, which it is needless to advert to more particularly, prevented him, for the past three years, exercising any immediate personal supervision. The present year is, therefore, a sort of re-commencement, and he presents this volume, not confident of having produced a perfect work by any means. The intelligent observer will notice several new features, which may be received as improvements. The Street Directory shows all the streets in alphabetical order, with their crossings; and where streets were numbered, with their numbers at the crossings; this will be found useful. The insertion of the names of all the members of firms, following the names of firms, will also be regarded as an improvement. The distinguishing of the names of those who appreciate the importance of advertising is but a fair tribute to their enterprise, and here we take occasion to make acknowledgment for the liberal advertising patronage which has been bestowed this year upon our Directory, more we believe than in any one year previous.

The reproduction of the graphic picture of Buffalo, as wrought by Judge CLINTON, some years since, seemed a fitting introduction to the comprehensive sketch by Dr. S. B. HUNT, of the Morning Express. Both these papers will be found useful for reference. The present Directory will be found to contain nearly three thousand six hundred names more than was contained in the Directory for 1861, and quite an increase in names over the work of 1860.

In conclusion, the Compiler would beg the forbearance of all for the shortcomings which may be found in his Directory. A perfect work of this kind is, of course, not expected. With the experience of the present year, he hopes to produce in 1863 a work which will be an improvement on its predecessor.

Buffalo, June 21, 1862.

C. F. S. THOMAS, Compiler.
