"In the Lord put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain? 2. For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart. 3. If the foundations by destroyed, what can the righteous do? 4. The Lord is in His holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven: His eyes behold, His eye-lids try, the children of men. 5. The Lord trieth the righteous; but the wicked and him that loveth violence His soul hateth. 6. Upon the wicked He shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest this shall be the portion of their cup. 7. For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; His countenance doth behold the upright.”—Psal. xi.

THE exercise of genuine faith is frequently involved in a conflict with unbelief. Without being at all allied to unbelief, faith is yet oftentimes in near association with it. In a sore struggle, they frequently come to very close quarters. As is the case with wrestlers who become too closely entangled with one another for the bystander easily to distinguish what belongs to each, so faith and unbelief are often locked up in the embrace of a deadly struggle for the mastery of the soul, till it becomes hard at times for the eye of self-examination to disentangle them. And yet there is no affinity between the two. They are clearly diverse in nature. They are as opposed the one to the other, as light is to darkness, as death is to life.

Now, it is just such a deadly struggle, in the experience of a true child of God, of which this psalm supplies an illustration.
