2 But though the poison lurks within, Hope bids me still with patience wait; Till death shall set me free from sin, Free from the only thing I hate.
3 Had I a throne above the rest, Where angels and archangels dwell; One sin, unslain, within my breast, Would make that heaven as dark as hell.
4 But oh! no foe invades the bliss,
When glory crowns the christian's head; One view of Jesus as He is,
Will strike all sin for ever dead.
94. THE CHRISTIAN IN CONFLICT. (Dublin.)
1 Weeps the christian while his view Shows the dangers in his path, All that he must struggle through Ere he conquer sin and death?
2 Faints he while the weight of sins Presses down his sinking soul; While the tempter's power begins His last efforts to control ?
3 Lift, sad christian, lift thine eye,
Jesus sits enthroned above.
He can all thy need supply, He is everlasting love.
4 Come, sad christian, come, and plead, Make thy suit at mercy's throne, Pray for help in time of need,
Pray, and then the victory's thine.
1 Love divine how sweet the sound! Let the theme on earth abound! May the hearts of saints below With the sacred rapture glow!
2 Love amazing, large and free, Love unknown to think on me! Let that love upon me shine Saviour, with its beams divine.
3 Better than earth's gilded toys, Or an age of carnal joys; Better far than Ophir's gold, Love that never can be told.
4 Better than this life of mine Saviour, is thy love divine; Drop the veil, and let me see Rivers of this love in Thee.
96. THE NAME OF JESUS. (St. David's.)
1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds In a believer's ear,
It sooths his sorrows, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear.
2 It makes the wounded spirit whole, And calms the troubled breast; 'Tis manna to the hungry soul, And to the weary rest.
3 Dear name! the rock on which I build, My shield and hiding place : My never-failing treasury, filled With boundless stores of grace.
4 Jesus, my Shepherd, Husband, Friend! My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End! Accept the praise I bring.
5 Weak is the effort of my heart, And cold my warmest thought; But when I see Thee as Thou art, I'll praise Thee as 1 ought.
6 Till then I would thy love proclaim With every fleeting breath; And may the music of thy name Refresh my soul in death.
97. JESUS OUR LIGHT. (St. James's)
1 When nature, rising into birth,
Burst through the chains of night: When man first viewed the heavens and earth, The Saviour was his light.
2 And now all earth in darkness lies, Now God is out of sight,
Till the great Sun of truth arise, And Jesus is our light.
3 Yes, the rich radiance of the Lamb Makes all our prospects bright,
We plead the glory of his name, And Jesus is our light.
4 O may his gospel pierce the soul, Borne by the Spirit's might, And may our conduct prove to all That Jesus is our light.
5 Sin will oppress our souls with care And check our heavenward flight, But Jesus loved, and sought in prayer, Will be our daily light.
98. I. Thess. v. 14 to 24. (Amia.)
1 Eternal Lord, by grace control, And sanctify each humble soul, With thine own self our spirits fill ; Restrain the unruly, stubborn will.
2 Let this, O Lord, be our delight, To lead the wand'ring sinner right: The weak to comfort, and to raise The fallen to the mount of praise.
3 0 let no vengeful thought impart Its poisoned malice to the heart, But love and patience may we show In all our intercourse below.
