THIS volume very imperfectly realizes the hope which induced its design. I have written chiefly for the young, and taking striking passages from the sacred writings, beautiful to the eye of taste as well as faith, yet with the dust of remote ages, often obscuring their deep interest, I have endeavoured to unite them more with our present human sympathies, than they appear, cloistered as it were in the awe and sanctity of religious mysteries. It is to be lamented that the characters of Scripture, especially of the Old Testament, have to us almost a cold and shadowlike existence, as though of another nature, a different humanity; but these were in reality |
