He had two fons; Thomas, Captain of Deal-Caftle, who died without iffue; and Sir Robert Wingfield of Orford, who in 1520 (12 Hen. VIII.) was prefent at the memorable interview that King had with Francis I. of France, between Guifnes and Ardres; when, in their march, the number of the French being perceived by the Lord Abergavenny to be double the number of the English, he was appointed with that Lord, the Earl of Effex, and Edward Poynings to take an account of the French King's attendants.In 35 Hen. VIII. he had a grant of the manors of Upton and Ailesworth in the county of Northampton, with other lands thereabouts, having as Camden relates, a fine boufe with lovely walks at Upton. He married Margery, daughter of George Quarles, of Norfolk, and was father of Sir Robert Wingfield of Upton, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Cecil of Burleigh, Efq. fifter to the Lord Treasurer Cecil, and by her, who re-married with Hugh Allington, Esq. had four fons and two daughters; Sir Robert, his heir, John; Richard, who died unmarried; Peregrine; Dorothy, married to Adam Claypole of Latham in Lincolnshire, Esq; and Cicely. John Wingfield of Tickencote in the county of Rutland, the fecond fon, married firft the daughter of Paul Gresham, and secondly the daughter of Thorold, and was father by the former of Sir John Wingfield (called in the Cromwell pedigree Sir Richard) of Tickencote, who married Frances, daughter of Edward, Lord Cromwell of Okeham, and had Sir Richard Wingfield his heir, John, Charles, and Francis of Gray's-Inn: Sir Richard was godfon to Sir Richard Wingfield, Viscount Powerscourt, who by his will left him 100l. in token of his love. He married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Sir William Thorold of Marston in Lincolnshire, Bart. and had two fons, John, Charles, and an only daughter, Frances, married to Eufebius Bufwell, otherwife Pelfant, Efq. (by whom she had Sir Eufebius Bufwell of Clipston in Northamptonshire, created a Baronet 5 March 1713). John Wingfield of Tickencote, Efq. the elder fon, by Dorothy, elder daughter of Sir Thoras Mackworth of Normanton in the county of Rutland, Bart. (who died in 1694, by his firft wife Dorothy, daughter of Captain George Darrell of Cale-Hill in Kent) was father of John Wingfield, Efq. who married Elizabeth, daughter and coheir to Sir John Oldfield of Spalding in Lincolnshire, Bart. and by her who died 3 March 1769, had John, his fucceffor, at Tickencote, (which after became

Sir Robert Wingfield, who fucceeded at Upton, was burgefs in parliament for Stamford in the reign of James I.; married the daughter of Sir John Crooke 2, and was father of another Sir Robert, who married Elizabeth, third of the four daughters and coheirs of Sir Roger Afton, Gentleman of the Bedchamber to K. James I. by Mary, daughter of Alexander Steuart, Lord Ochiltree, and by her had Sir Mervyn Wingfield, the father of Sir Henry of Upton, who married in France, and died without iffue; and a daughter 3.

We now return to the eldest son of Sir Robert by Elizabeth Goufell, viz. Sir John Wingfield, Lord of Letheringham. who had a licence in 1437 (15 Hen. VI.) to erect a chantry in Stradbroke; in 33 of which reign he was Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, and had a privy feal, dated 23 November, for 160l. to defray the expences thereof. He was knighted in the tower of London 26 June 1461 (1 Edw. IV.) and in 1471 was again Sheriff of those counties, being then one of the King's privy council, for which attendance he had a privy feal, 7 October, for 40l. a year, as had been accustomed to other Knights in fuch cafes.In 1477 he was a commiffioner to treat with the French ambaffadors at Amiens; and, in all probability, the broken infcription in Letheringham-church (whofe fragments are preferved in Weaver's funeral monumants) relates to his death on 10 May 1481. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Fitz-Lewis of Effex, by Anne, eldest daughter of John Montacute, Earl of Salisbury, and by her (who in her will, dated 14 July 1497, and proved 22 December 1500, directs her body to be buried near her husband's tomb in Letheringham) had iffue three daughters, Anne; Elizabeth, married to Itchingham; and the younger to Brews, by whom he had iffue two fons, Thomas and John. Sir John had alfo twelve fons, viz.

three fons and four daughters; of whom Sir Anthony Wingfield, the eldest son, was Efquire of the King's body, and commanded to receive the honour of a Knight of the Bath at the defigned coronation of Edward V. He was of the privy council to K. Henry VII. and appointed one of the commiffioners to mufter the archers of Suffolk for the relief of Bretagne ; was knighted by K. Henry VIII. for his conduct at Therouenne and Tournay; after which he was made comptroller of the houfhold, and by that title inftalled 8 May 1541 a Knight of the Garter at Windfor. He was alfo conftituted Vice-Chamberlain of the houshold, Captain of the guards, and executor of that King's last will, who left him a legacy of 200l. and affigned him of council to his fon K. Edward VI '.

He married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Sir George Vere, fifter and coheir to John, the fourteenth Earl of Oxford, and had iffue, five fons, Sir Robert; Charles, and Anthony, both died childless, the former having married a daughter of Rich, and the latter, a daughter of Blenerhaffet; Henry, (who married a daughter of Bacon, and had Robert, who by his first wife, the daughter of Rofers, had Anthony, and by his fecond wife, the daughter of Drake, had a fon Edmond); and Richard, who by the daughter and heir of Hardwicke, was father of Sir John Wingfield, who, with Sir Richard, and Sir Edward Wingfield, Knts. in 1596 went commanders in the fleet fitted out against Spain, confifting of 150 fhips; with 6360 land forces on board, under the command of Robert Earl of Effex, and Charles, Lord Howard of Effingham, Admiral of England; Sir John was Quarter-Mafter-General of this army, Sir Richard a Colonel, and Sir Edward a Captain of 1000 gentlemen volun teers. In this expedition Cales was taken, and Sir John loft his life, being the only Englishman of note that perished, and was honourably interred with a military funeral in the principal church 3.He married Sufan, daughter of Richard Bertie, Efq. (by his wife Catharine, daughter and heir to William, Baron Willoughby of Erefby, widow of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk)fifter to Peregrine Bertie, Lord Willoughby of Erefby, ancestor to the late Duke of Ancafter, and widow of Reginald Grey, Earl of Kent, by whom he had a fon Peregrine, born in Holland, in 15834. We now proceed with Sir Robert Wingfield, eldest son of Sir Anthony, Knight of the Garter, who fucceeded to the estates of Letheringham, &c. and being Captain of the guard to K. Edward VI. was fent by the Lords of the council to Windfor (in 1549) to induce the King to remove his uncle Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerfet, Lord Protector, when he fo well perfuaded his Majefty, both of the loyal affection of the Lords to him, and of their moderate defires against the Duke (who was then prefent) that the King confented to his removal, and a guard was fet upon him. He was knighted in the reign of Q. Mary; married Cicely, daughter of Thomas, Lord Wentworth of Nettlefted, and had three fons; of whom Sir Anthony,、 the eldest, was sheriff of Suffolk 39 Eliz. after which he was knighted, and leaving no iffue by Mary, daughter of John Bird of Denston in Suffolk, Efq. was fucceeded by his brother Thomas, who was also a Knight, and by his fecond wife, a daughter of Sir Drue Drury of Riddlesworth in Norfolk, Knt. left one fon Sir Anthony Wingfield, of Goodwins in Suffolk, created a Baronet 17 May, 1627, who died about the year 1638, æt. 38, and by Anne, daughter of Sir John Deane of the fame county, Knt. was father of Sir Richard Wingfield, Bart. who (the old manfion being decayed) built and refided at Easton in Suffolk, and married first the daughter of Sir John Jacob, Bart. and fecondly, the daughter of Sir John Winter of Lidney in Gloucestershire, by each of whom he left a son, viz. Sir Robert, the third Baronet, who dying unmarried, his half-brother Sir Henry fucceeded; who ferving in the French army, had his leg fhot off by a canon-ball at Dulward in Loraine, and was there buried in 1677, leaving iffue by Mary, eldest daughter of Mervyn, Earl of Castlehaven, two fons; Sir Henry, who, being a minor, was educated by his mother in the Romish religion, and following the fortunes of K. James II. fold his eftates of Letheringham, Easton, &c. to the Earl of Rochford in K. Willi. am's Reign, and dying without iffue male, in 1712, was fucceeded by his brother Sir Mervyn Wingfield, who married Mary, daughter of Theobald Dalton of Grenan in the county of Westmeath, Efq. which lady died in childbirth, leaving an only daughter Mary, married in 1731 to Francis Dillon, Esq. eldest son of William Dillon, Esq. of Proudfton and Kilmainham in the county of Meath, and The died 20 February 1765, leaving iffue 2.

Sir Edward Wingfield was the fecond fon of Sir John of Letheringham; and to him K. Henry VII. 20 February 1492 granted an annuity of 20!. for life. He left no iffue by his wife Anne, Countess of Kent.

Henry, a Prieft, prefented by his father in 1480 to the rectory of Baconsthorp in Norfolk, and was also rector of Rendlesham in Suffolk. He died in the year 1500, and by his will, dated 5 August, and proved 22 December that year, orders a tomb to be made for himself in the churchyard of Letheringham, upon which the Palmes might be laid in paffion week.

Sir John Wingfield, the younger, of Dunham-Magną in Norfolk, had a grant from K. Henry VII in his fecond year of an annuity of 401. for life. He married Margaret, daughter of Durward, by whom he had Thomas, his heir; and William, an Auguftine canon at the furrender of the monastery of Weftacre in that county, who was after inftituted to the rectory of Burnham-thorp,of which he was deprived in the beginning of Q. Mary's reign for being married, and was oblied to be divorced. He died in 1556, leaving two fons, Thomas of Winch in Norfolk, and Anthony.-Thomas, the eldest son of Sir John of Dunham, fucceeded there; and by Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Sir Thomas Wodehoufe of Kimberley in the faid county, Knight of the Bath, had two fons, Roger of Dunham, who married the daughter of Golding; as did John the daughter of Thomas Townshend, and they both left iffue female; of whom Elizabeth (daughter of Roger) was married to Thomas, fon and heir to Henry Poole of Dichling in Suffex, Efq. and by him, who died 13 February 1609, had one fon and two daughters 2.

William was Sewer to Henry VII. married Joan, daughter of Thomas Walgrave, and died 4 December 1491, without iffue *.

Sir Thomas, fome time Captain of Deal-Caftle, was flain in the battle of Bofworth, on the part of Henry Vll. without iffue.

Sir Robert, bred up by his aunt the Lady Scrope, became a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerufalem, Mareschal of Calais; Lieutenant of that Castle, Deputy of the Town and the Matches, and laftly Mayor of that place. He was
