Roger de Rowley of Carmichan, living 13 K. Richard Roger, II. which Roger by Rofe his wife, had two fons, Randolfe, his heir, and Nicholas.

Randolfe of Carmichan the elder fon, living in 2 K. Henry VI. married Margaret, daughter of John Licelor, and had Randolfe living 18 Henry VI. whose fon Robert, had a fon Robert living 31 of that reign, who by Elizabeth his wife, had a fon, whofe name we have not recovered, but according to the pedigree he removed his refidence to Elington, in the county of Huntingdon, and was father of Robert, who fold his lands of Carmichan and other places in Cheshire to Henry Manwaring, Efq. 13 Henry VIII.

Nicholas, the fecond fon of Robert aforesaid, in 1429, Nicholas. 7 K. Henry VI. married Cifley, daughter and coheir to Thomas Le Wolfe of Church-Lawton, in the county of Chefter, Efq. *; in her right he became feated there, and had iffue John Rowley of Lawton, who had a fon John. John. living 7 Hen. VIII. ; which John by Cifley his wife, had two fons, of whom Hugh, the elder dying without iffue, was fucceeded by his brother William Rowley of the fame place, who married Ellen, daughter of Hugh Brereton of Wimerfley, brother to Sir Andrew Brereton, Knt. and had iffue three fons, viz.

John, whofe only fon William, died young.

Robert, who married Agnes, daughter of Richard Yardley of Park, in the county of Stafford, and had a fon William of Lawton, living in 1633, whofe offspring remained at Lawton 24 Auguft 1684; and

Hugh, who married Mary Rowley, daughter of Hugh. Rowley of Shelton, in the county of Stafford, a younger branch of the Rowleys of Hickley in that county, and by her had iffue, three fons, who all fettled in the county of Derry; in the reign of K. James I. and were

John, of Castle-Roe;

Nathaniel, of the city of Londonderry, who married, but died without iffue; and

William, of Tobermore in the county of Londonderry, who for fome time bore arms against the rebels, but died in April 1642; he married Mary, daughter of John Dillon of Caftle-Dillon in the county of Armagh, "Efq. and had iffue three fons and three daughters, viz. John, flain at Ballymoney in the county of Antrim, in an engagement with the Irish rebels in March 1641, as was his brother William, whofe eldest fon Edward was living in April' 1662 and then of the age of 30 years; Hugh Rowley of Culmore, Efq. member of parliament for Newtown-Lemavady in 1692; he married 17 October 1661, Mary, eldest daughter of Edward Rowley of Cattle-Roe, Efq. Daughter Mary, born in 1629, died in 1684; Margery, died young or unmarried; and Catherine, married William Smith, Archdeacon of Armagh.

John, of Caftle-Roe, the eldest fon of Hugh, came into Ireland in the reign of K. James I. as fole agent for the building of the towns of Derry and Coleraine, for the London Society, and brought his brothers already menti oned, with him. In the parliament of 1613, he reprefented the county of Coleraine, fo called before its erection into that of Londonderry; upon the incorporation of the city of Derry, that year, he was by the charter appointed the first mayor. Dying in 1618 he left iffue by Mary' daughter of Robert Gage of Rands in the county of Northampton, Efq. and Dowager of the barony of Kirkcudbright, one fon Edward and three daughters, viz. Anne, (married to Triftram Beresford of Coleraine, Efq. ancestor to the noble family of Tyrone); Elizabeth who died young; and Mary 3, married to James Clotworthy, Ffq. brother to John, created Viscount Massaṛeene, and by him had an

only daughter Mary, married to the Hon. Robert Fitz, Gerald, by whom he was grandmother of James, first Duke of Leinster.The Lady Baronefs Kirkcudbright, married thirdly Sir George Trevilian of Nettlesome in the county of Devon; and the married laftly Robert M Lelan, Efq. and died 7 Auguft 1639.

Edward Rowley of Caftle-Roe, Efq. only fon of John, Edward. was representative of the county of Londonderry, in the parliaments of 1634 and 1635.-He was the first who raised a regiment of foot against the rebels in Ulfter, and died honourably in the field. He married Lettice 2, daugh ter of Sir Hugh Clotworthy 3 of Antrim, Knt. and fifter to the above-mentioned James Clotworthy, and by her who djed 12 October 1681, had iffue two fons and two daughters, viz.

John, who fucceeded his father.

Hugh, who married Martha, daughter and heir to Owen O Conolly, the honoured difcoverer of the plot formed by the Irish for the furprifal of Dublin 23 October 1641, and the maffacre of the proteftants all over the kingdom.

Daughter Mary, was married to Hugh Rowley of Culmore, Efq. as before obferved, and

Lettice, who died unmarried, 5 November 1642*, aged 20 years. John, the eldest fon, born 22 May 1635, was knighted Sir John. in February 1661 for his important fervices at the time of the restoration. He was member of parliament for the county of Londonderry in that year, and died 21 August 1679. He married 26 December 1671, Mary , eldest daughter of Sir Hercules Langford of Summer-Hill in the county of Meath, Bart. (by Mary, daughter of Henry Upton of the county of Devon, afterwards of Caftle-Norton in the county of Antrim. Efq. and had iffue Arthur; Henry; Theophilus; Mary, and Martha'; of whom Mary was the only furvivor), who dying 18 June 16837, was buried at St. Michan's Dublin; and the estate of Summer-Hill came to this family. Sir John Rowley had iffue by her, who died at Summer-Hill in 1684 one daughter, Lettice, who married Arthur, Viscount Loftus of Ely; and a son and heir

Hercules, who was member of parliament for the county of Londonderry, from the year 1703, to his death 19 September 1742; he left iffue, by Frances daughter of Arthur Upton of Caftle-Upton in the county of Antrim, Efq. whom he married in January 1705, a daughter Dorothy-Beresford, married to Richard Viscount Powerfcourt; and a fon and fucceffor

Hercules- Hercules-Langford, who in 1743 was elected to parliaLangford. ment in the room of his father, for the county of Londonderry, and in 1761 for that of Meath, which he has continued to reprefent in every parliament fince that time; and is one of his Majesty's most honourable Privy Council. He married, 31 August 1732, Elizabeth only daughter of Clotworthy Upton Efq. (member of parliament for the borough of Newtown, in 1695, and in 1703 for the county of Antrim, which he reprefented to his death in June 1725) by Jane his wife, daughter of John Ormfby of Ballyvenoge in the county of Limerick, Efq. and her only brother John Ormsby dying without iffue, his eftates devolved upon his niece Mrs. Rowley now lady Langford, who has had iffue three fons, and four daughters, viz.

Hercules 2, born 29 October 1737, reprefentative in parliament for the county of Antrim.

Clotworthy, who 20 January 1775, married Elizabeth daughter of William Crofbie of the county of Kerry, Esq., and niece to Garret late Earl of Mornington; he died in 1781, leaving iffue by her who died 12 March 1779, an only daughter Frances 3.

His Majefty was pleased to advance Mrs. Rowley to the peerage of this kingdom, by the titles of Viscounters Langford of Langford Lodge, and Baronefs of Summerhill, with limitation of the honours of Viscount and Baron to her heirs male by her husband the Right Hon. Hercules Langford Rowley, by privy feal, dated at St. James's 27 December 1765, and by patent at Dublin 19 February, 1766.

Francis, who was born in the parish of St. Giles in the fields Francis, London, 23 January 1628. He fixed his refidence in Ireland, living at Cloghmaghericatt now Caftle-Wellan in the county of Down; to oppose the arbitrary measures of K. James II. he raised a body of horfe and foot, but was compelled to fly, and was attainted by the Irish parliament, who fequeftered his eftate of 390l. a year. He married Deborah, daughter
