CONSUMPTION

AND ALL LUNG DISEASES.

By G. T. CONGREVE, Coombe Lodge, Peckham.

The Nature, Progress, and True Treatment of this Scourge of England.

The following Cases are selected from the THIRTEENTH SERIES, now being published.

CASE OF DISEASED LUNGS, THOMAS POPE, ESH WINNING, near DURHAM,

This remarkable case was brought under my notice by Mr. ERNEST FOSTER, of 18, Westterrace, Esh Winning, Waterhouses, Durham, in May last. The patient, a steady, industrious man, with very large family, sought that help from me which I will cheerfully give in all well-accredited cases of need. He had been recommended also by Dr. M. (the colliery medical adviser) to adopt my treatment.

The patient's illness originated with a severe cold. Acute pains in the left lung followed with constant difficult breathing. Green expectoration with occasional mixture of blood. There were hectic flushes, profuse perspirations, great loss of flesh, strength rapidly declining. The patient says:-"Three local doctors all say, Lungs diseased.' One recommends your treatment,"

In three days after following the advice then sent by letter, the patient commenced to improve (the reader must not suppose that in all cases there is an immediate improvement nor should any patient be discouraged if some time elapse before any visible amendment). The symptoms gradually abated after this. There was an occasional relapse, and sometimes there appeared to be a standstill. But in three months his own doctor reported his lungs nearly well.

Great interest was felt in this case, and the correspondence continued until December. In a letter dated Dec. 16, Mr. Ernest Foster writes as follows:--"I am pleased to bear my testimony to the wonderful efficacy of your treatment for Consumption as proved by the perfect restoration to health of Mr. Thomas Pope, who after being given up as past human help has been restored by you (under God).

"Any one who had seen him in May last when he applied to you could hardly believe him now to be the same person. Then he seemed as though a very short time would put an end to his suffering; now he looks the picture of health, and he is able to follow his occupation.

"He has been without medicine for several weeks to test his cure and has had no returning symptoms.

"Many other remarkable cases have come under my notice which I shall be glad to refer to should you wish. You are at perfect liberty to make any use of this that you please. Yours faithfully, ERNEST FOSTER."

CONFIRMED CASE of BRONCHO-PHTHISIS.-Miss JANE JONES, of 7, NEW BRENT STREET, HENDON, N.W.

About 18 months since she had had a chronic cough for 9 years. Three years ago her right lung was pronounced diseased. This had progressed slowly to the time of her commencing my treatment. "My doctor (she says) pronounced me to be in a very bad state."

The cough and expectoration at this time were very distressing. There were pains in the right axilla commencing also in the left side Breathing short. Great irritation, and inflammatory condition of the fauces. Examined by Dr. Brown: "The upper lobe of each lung affected. The right most-a chronic case of Broncho-Phthisis." (In such cases, unless there be some efficient means to cope with the disease, there must be a fatal termination, although it may be slow.)`

The patient commenced with my medicine, visiting Coombe Lodge at various times, and writing when unable to come. Her improvement was gradual and sure; and in a letter dated Feb. 11, 1885, she says: "I have been gradually getting better all the time since I first came to you, and am now quite well. If you can make use of my case as a proof of the efficacy of your medicine you are at perfect liberty to do so. Yours gratefully,-JANE JONES."

TUDIES IN THE GOSPEL BY ST. JOHN. BY REV. J. CYNDDYLAN JONES. Crown 8vo., Cloth Boards; Price 5s.

ST

"The chorus of approval which greeted Mr. Jones' previous Studies in Matthew and the Acts,' which we reviewed with unqualified admiration some time ago, has created a standard of criticism for this new venture altogether out of the range of that by which ordinary sermons are to be judged. Mr. Jones stepped at once into the front rank of pulpit expositors, and we have seen no reason for rescinding our former judgment in classing him with Robertson and Bushnell, and, in some respects, even above them. In expounding certain portions of this matchless Gospel, Mr. Jones is even more at home than when discussing the questions raised in Matthew or the Acts. The profound metaphysics and theology of the Prologue have a peculiar charm for him, and it is easy to see that it has been a labour of love to make them clear to the humblest mind."-Methodist Recorder.

TUDIES IN THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES.

Crown 8vo., cloth boards, Second Edition, Price 5s.

By the Same Author.

The BISHOP OF LIVERPOOL says:-"It is a book of great freshness, vigour, and originality, as well as thoroughly sound in doctrine, and I wish it a wide circulation.'

The DEAN OF PETERBOROUGH says:-"It is full of interest and very fresh and suggestive. You have conferred a real benefit upon the Church, and I hope you will be encouraged to give us some more commentaries in the same strain. They will be valuable."

TUDIES IN THE GOSPEL BY ST. MATTHEW. By the Same Author. "This is a remarkable volume of sermons, in a singularly unpretending form. We never remember to have met with so much culture, freshness, power, pathos and fire in so small a space. It is a book to be read and re-read, with new instruc tion and stimulus on each perusal. It is no exaggeration to say that Mr. Jones is fully equal to Robertson at his best, and not seldom superior to him in intellectual grasp, depth of thought, clearness of exposition, pointedness of appeal, and fidelity to evangelical truth. The style, which is severely logical, reminds us in its beauty of Ruskin. These are models of what pulpit discourses ought to be. We shall look for more from the same able pen.". -Methodist Recorder.

NIMALS' OWN TALES. By "UNCLE WILL." Royal 16mo. Handsomely bound and illustrated.

Whoever Uncle Will' is, he is a clever story-teller, and moreover a good naturalist, for he has given the little folks some capital tales which cannot but delight and instruct them. We have the hedgehog's tale, the cuckoo's tale, the donkey's tale, the yellowhammer's tale, and the swan's tale, and they are all so good that we do not know which to prefer. Each one contains a lesson in natural history, and in each one a moral is supplied; so that it is really an instructive book as well as an amusing one. Moreover, it contains six beautiful illustrations, which are really such, and it is printed and bound in very neat style. If you want to give a child a book that it will read and read again, and not get tired of it, by all means give it Uncle Will's' tales."-Watchman.
